Great article on how changes in laws/regulations have greatly increased the Contestability of the markets for flights.

Amrit Jhita's curator insight, January 6, 2014 6:51 AM

This excellent article explains in considerable detail how and why, the changes in the law and general regulation concerning the Airline Industry in Chile (particularly), has somewhat effectively and efficiently helped to boost contestability in the market. To the delight of Economics A-level Students, this article is enveloped in some A* Evaluation, as it highlights a great deal of the problems and limitations with implementing these new laws and how, even with regulation, competition on an ideal level may not always be achievable (and neither can it be restricted in the hope to avoid a concentrated market structure of an Oligopoly and perhaps even Monopoly), especially when the barriers to entry (due to the dominance of a few Chilean Airlines) remain quite high. However, the presence of several domestic airlines have certainly improved competition over the years and increased consumer welfare due to the wider choice of flights available, and that too for a lower price!

This is definitely worth a read.

Still high barriers to entry, but at least the power is being spread across a wider number of firms.
