Patents and Price Discrimination: Strong Medicine - the Economics of Big Pharma

Patents and Price Discrimination: Strong Medicine - the Economics of Big Pharma | ECON_3 | Scoop.it

Hayley Louise Ripley Toms's curator insight, December 23, 2012 8:02 AM

Price discrimintion would be more 'equitable' and fair, but this isn't possible as it is very hard to price discriminate.

This is due to the 'seepage's between markets. E.g/ People go to the countries like Africa where the dugs are made cheaper, buy them there, and then sell them back in the more expensive countries.

This system is therefore not sustainable.

Patents give the pharma companies the incentive to innovate. Monopolypower = dynamic effeciency
