Brilliant Black Friday Disruption: Everlane Goes Black on Black Friday | TechCrunch | Ecom Revolution | Scoop.it
Everlane, one of the wave of vertically-integrated sites that is changing the way that fashion is made and sold, is today disrupting something else.

Marty Note
Everlane, a San Franciso based fashion retailer has taken their site down on Black Fridy with this note:

— BUY LESS, BUY BETTER —

As a business, we appreciate holiday shopping,
but we feel the excess around Black Friday has put
the focus on quantity over quality.

Because we want to help people consume
less by creating fewer, longer lasting products,
we decided to shut down the site today.

Have a wonderful holiday and
we’ll be back tomorrow.

Brilliant disruptive marketing. Marty

Massively cool social meida infogrpahics. I was thinking about how I used to give my ecommerce team Black Friday off back in the day (3 years ago when I was a Director of Ecommerce). Couldn't do that anymore. I'm not one of those guys who would have stuck our social person workig on Black Friday either. We would have all need to be in the boat to cureate the waves described here.

Is your child fair? Important "Like Me" Study for E-commerce Merchants

Is your child fair? Important "Like Me" Study for E-commerce Merchants | Ecom Revolution | Scoop.it

Outtakes from a psychology professor's lab in which children had to choose between fairness and chocolate!

Marty Note
These studies with babies and children are more than fascinating. If you sell things online you should be taking notes about things such as reviews, cause marketing and like me gamification. What this fascinating 60 Minutes report shows is even babies have a strong sense of justice and fairness.

The more important idea for merchants is how quickly LIKE ME preferenes form. We want to belong, interact with and buy from people LIKE US. If you try to be all things to everyone your website will mean little. If you know how to provide LIKE ME signals you will form tribes and succeed.

Watch this report and take notes.

Mobile Commerce Is Ecommerce - $31B By 2015 USA [Infographic]

Mobile Commerce Is Ecommerce - $31B By 2015 USA [Infographic] | Ecom Revolution | Scoop.it
Detailed Infographic covering the latest M-commerce statistics and Trends.

Marty Note
Sitting with some smart Internet marketing friends at Raleigh's Internet Summit I learned that the $100M website they manage now has 16% of sales coming from mobile phones and tablets. Wow, that is math even I can do without Excel. $16M in "Mobile Commerce" means the mobile tsunami is HERE. This infographic predicting $31B in US sales by 2015 and other helpful tidbits just underscore that e-commerce is now m-commerce.

Other thing I keep reminding myself is MOBILE is way more than the phone. Mobile is about design, data structure and how you tell a story in a much smaller device. The other trend we are seeing that is critical is the phone is mobile devices are curating people's lives. If you don't look good and tell a attention-grabbing story in mobile you never earn the right to play on my laptop or desktop. Mobile is the gatekeeper, so EVEN if your mobile traffic stats stay low the influence of mobile devices is being felt.

Geolocation Changes Google Keyword Rankings 69% of Time [Report + Brian Yanish Note] | Ecom Revolution | Scoop.it
Your website may rank for a keyword in the top 30 on Google in one location, but it may not rank for that same keyword across all other locations, according to a new report from Linkdex examining companies that operate in multiple locations.

Marty Note
If you compete for traffic and sales online you are going to want to read this report about the impact of locaton on search results. We knew Google's float changes who sees what. Now who sees what where is variable too.

Also read my note on: Geo Rankins An SEO KPI Game Changer

Good note from Brian:

Brian Yanish -

MarketingHits.com I added this to my rescoop - Brian's note - future search results will be geo targeted right down to the where you are standing on a street. -00- Google Glasses may even take it one more step, to the direction you are facing and what you are looking at.

Now added your past search and click history, friend influance and reviews back into to mix and each person see different results.

The new SEO will need to include consumer contact points. Foursquare is just the beginning of what's to come. (Today, 9:42 AM)

Will Sandy Destroy Christmas For Major East Coast eCommerce Retailers

Will Sandy Destroy Christmas For Major East Coast eCommerce Retailers | Ecom Revolution | Scoop.it

Hurricane Sandy Has Major Impact On Banking, eCommerce IndustriesPYMNTS.comWe're still coming to realize the full extent of the damage Hurricane Sandy has caused to people, land and businesses along the east coast.

Marty Note
Wow, when the hurricane doesn't happen to YOU you have a hard time understanding it. I've lived through four hurricanes here in North Carolina. The most surreal experience was leaving after Fran to get a hotel room in Greensboro, about an hour's drive away.

In Greensboro it was life as usual except there were Hollywood stars in the lobby of the hotel (evacuated from Wilmington). When the media was discussing the "Super Storm" I couldn't imagine it was that big a deal considering it was a Cat 1. Cat 4's is when the real fun starts, but this article discusses the loss of holiday shipping by major east coast retailers and the banks that depend on them. Fascinating. Feels like I am sitting in Greenboro again.

Think good thoughts and send money is the best way to help our friends beat down by Sandy if our experience here in NC is any indication. By the looks of things, send LOTS of money :).

Just for grins I thought you would enjoy this list and the accompanying photos/quotes for a shot of inspiration as we head into the fall and get ready for 2013.

Have fun exploring!

This review was written by Karen Dietz for her curated content on business storytelling at www.scoop.it/t/just-story-it

Marty Note
As an Ecommerce director my team and I helped make over $30M online in over 500,000 B2C transactions. This note from master storytelling Karen Dietz (@kdietz) shared by a masterful Internet marketer (John van den Brink @AtDotComSocial) is a pretty good summary of how we made more money every year than the previous year for 7 years and never returned less than 18% net net.

The other thing we tried to remember was Ben and Jerry's dictum. If it isn't fun, why do it?

eCommerce Rocks $42B, + 14% This Holiday Over Last [+Marty Note]

eCommerce Rocks $42B, + 14% This Holiday Over Last [+Marty Note] | Ecom Revolution | Scoop.it
According to the latest projections from ComScore, this holiday season will give a big boost to eCommerce activity year-over-year. Based on these new.

Marty Note
I'm an old e-commerce merchant having spent seven years as a Director of Ecommerce, so love to see another 15% growth rate for about the 5th year in a row. Last year online commerce was 11% of total retail in the US. The UK was already at 15% and that is where we are headed too.

The really GREAT news is growth in the face of the crazy midnight ramblings, door busters and camping out. That stuff makes for great video clips on local news programs and probably drives another 3% of traffic to the web as people vow not to go near their favorite stores until the madness is over (lol).

I'm waiting for the brick and mortar retailer who really gets the web. Too many see the web as an oppositional force. Something that is 15% of your topline and contributing more on a % basis to your bottom line (since it doesn't take as many fixed resources to execute a successful web strategy) shouldn't be viewed as opposition (is my thinking, call me crazy :).

Here Comes Black Friday Mania and More Money Online Than We Could Have Ever Imagined

Here Comes Black Friday Mania and More Money Online Than We Could Have Ever Imagined | Ecom Revolution | Scoop.it

Infographic: This season, shoppers will be out in full force. Here's a look at just how much they're planning to spend.

Marty Note
I've heard several analysts say retailers are testing all this door buster BS. Let's hope a larger number go online than camp out and have Thanksgiving dinner in a line waiting on a "deal" that will never compensate for the pain required to get there.

I can remember when we did our first $100K in a YEAR and thought life as we knew it was OVER. Then we thought of $100K as a bad month, then a bad week and finally a bad day (at this time of year especially). It all happend and is still happening SO FAST.

I am a gamify guy and get that this door busting is all about the game, but point of diminishing returns must have been reached some time ago.  The problem is all of this crazy BS seems like it is working.

The frenzy, the crowds and in the meantime you can stir a crowd 10x as large with 2x the effort online. If you are going to play the Door Buster BS Game then take your iPad and showroom the heck out of 'em. PLEASE since 2 degrees more and this door buster trend is the end of times.

Doors are to be OPENED not BUSTED.

Hang with this video for a bit. The unfortunate MySpace reference aside the general ideas are accurate. What seems like a flood of data now will seem paltry tomorrow. What feels connected now will seem awkward and like rough friction tomorrow.

One day right around this time of year I realized there was a business as large as the one I was managing out there in the ether. Our shopping cart abandonment could get as high as 64%. We need to understand WHY shopping carts get abandoned. This infographic helps define the sources for the most common drops. Lucky, as is usually the case, many of these problems are simple fixes, small tweaks that could make a BIG difference in your website's money to the back and recovery from shopping cart abandonment.

5 Retail Lessons For Ecommerce Sites

5 Retail Lessons For Ecommerce Sites | Ecom Revolution | Scoop.it
Social commerce has the potential to use some of the fun aspects of real-world shopping. Here are a few ways retailers can deliver.

The traditional ecommerce experience normally entails searching on Google or Amazon for the product you want, and then scanning for the cheapest deal. Or maybe it means visiting a retailer’s website and trolling through 575 pairs of shoes to find something that suits your style. But rarely does buying online feel like the enjoyable real-world experience of “going shopping.”

By contrast, meeting up at the mall or wandering a busy shopping district with a friend is an inherently social experience. You never know what cool stuff you’ll stumble across, and those moments are what make going shopping so much fun. These fun aspects are actually transferable to the online world.

Here are the five to focus on.

1. Let People Emote
2. Showcase What’s Hot
3. Ditch the Cart
4. Lead with Mobile
5. Use Data to Fuel Discovery
