There is an overlap... between word of mouth and organic searching.. both have great value and need to be managed. I do think tho that the very strongest technique is to develop first a strong WOM drive strategy to gain traction in a category unless the category itself is on fire then, you may want to up the SEO drive first.

Interesting back and forth between Matt Cutts and others about whether Google +1 has a possitive effect on search rankings.  My suggestion is focus on writting great content that is interesting and relevant, work on building your social networks and getting as many people to view the content as possible. 

 

Creating top quality content that is interesting and relevant is the basis for developing a virtuous cycle of more traffic, larger social networks and higher search engine rankings.
