The Collect Store and Shipping Guide from Terracycle-What Amazing Recycling Company Unfortunately Not Yet in Greece!!!

My daughter had a summer job in a well known take away coffee shop here on Milos... One day whilst visiting the shop, I noticed them throwing away largish plastic yogurt containers and various square plasic containers. They were fine and absolutely reuseable!!!

Many thanks go to the Gregory’s & Coffeeright. here on Milos that allowed my daughter to gather everything that was reuseable, and bring it home, on a daily basis.   I now have a HUGE collection of cleaned plastic containers which I plan to upcycle into useful objects. The yogurt containers in particular are amazing and I am currently working on upcycling them into bags...yes bags and I will make them funky and amazing if it's the last thing I do!!!

That presents another problem too, of couse........is the Greek market ready to buy upcycled products???  I'm a small business and I have to pay tax and insurance....

If a company such as this existed in Greece-maybe it does and I just haven't found it yet- I believe that businesses such as Gregory’s & Coffeeright.  would indeed recycle their unwanted plastic etc.

So, as we need a company like Terracycle in Greece, I'm sending a virtual invitation!!   Meanwhile .....any advice about how to market upcycled products in Greece?

The strange science behind design: materials from unusual sources

The strange science behind design: materials from unusual sources | Ecology news, upcycling & recycling | Scoop.it

Many of the examples here use existing waste streams or manufacturing byproducts to create unique materials. Makers and manufacturers are also increasingly growing a social conscience and moving beyond environmental impact alone. The process of making sustainable textiles and textile-related products requires buy-in at multiple levels – from raw materials, manufacturing and distribution to design, branding and consumer preferences.

Bolivia Gives Legal Rights To The Earth

Bolivia Gives Legal Rights To The Earth | Ecology news, upcycling & recycling | Scoop.it

Bolivia is to become the first country in the world to give nature comprehensive legal rights in an effort to halt climate change and the exploitation of the natural world, and to improve quality of life for the Bolivian people.

Developed by grassroots social groups and agreed by politicians, the Law of Mother Earth recognizes the rights of all living things, giving the natural world equal status to human beings.

This Phone That Comes Apart Like Legos Could Change Everything

This Phone That Comes Apart Like Legos Could Change Everything | Ecology news, upcycling & recycling | Scoop.it
Dave Hakkens thinks the way people currently buy electronics is inherently wasteful. As soon as a new device comes out, the old one is tossed in the garbage or put on the shelf to collect dust. But the Dutch designer wants to change that with a Lego-like device in which parts of the phone, not the entire device, can be replaced.
Milos Crafts's insight:

Absolutely simple..absolutely brilliant!  I hope the design is successful!

16 yr old Elif Bilgin from Turkey spent two years developing a bioplastic from banana peels and won a top prize from Scientific American

16 yr old Elif Bilgin from Turkey spent two years developing a bioplastic from banana peels and won a top prize from Scientific American | Ecology news, upcycling & recycling | Scoop.it

As fruit, bananas are perfectly packaged – all the protection they need is provided by their flexible, resilient peels. As sixteen-year-old Turkish student Elif Bilgin discovered, the starches and cellulose contained in their outer layer can also be used to create materials that insulate wires and form medical protheses. Bilgin developed a chemical process that turns the peels into a non-decaying bioplastic that she hopes will help replace the need for petroleum and combat pollution. Bilgin’s endeavors won her the top prize and $50,000 at the Scientific American Science in Action competition, as well as the honor of becoming a finalist in the Google Science Fair.

How Eco-Friendly is Bamboo Fabric, Really? | Ecouterre

How Eco-Friendly is Bamboo Fabric, Really? | Ecouterre | Ecology news, upcycling & recycling | Scoop.it

Bamboo is the fastest-growing woody plant in the world, capable of growing up to four feet a day. Most of it is grown organically (though very little is certified organic), and in most locations requires no irrigation or fertilizers. There are some concerns about its use, namely depleting natural bamboo habitats (for pandas) and clearing forests for bamboo plantations. But for the most part, the growing of bamboo can be considered sustainable. Fabric made from bamboo, however, is more controversial..

Inside the lonely fight against the biggest environmental problem you've never heard of

Inside the lonely fight against the biggest environmental problem you've never heard of | Ecology news, upcycling & recycling | Scoop.it

In 2011, an ecologist released an alarming study showing that tiny clothing fibers could be the biggest source of plastic in our oceans. The bigger problem? No one wanted to hear that 85% of the human-made material found on the shoreline were microfibers, and matched the types of material, such as nylon and acrylic, used in clothing.

Honestly, This Is Way Cooler And More Informative Than Any Earth Day Poster

Honestly, This Is Way Cooler And More Informative Than Any Earth Day Poster | Ecology news, upcycling & recycling | Scoop.it

Now this is a hella cool way to frame an environmental message. On New York City’s Governers Island stands a structure large enough to dance in and filled with bright, beautiful light during the day. The good people of Studio KCA created the “Head in the Clouds” pavilion out of 53,780 plastic bottles and jugs — the number of plastic bottles thrown away in New York City in just one hour.

The whole idea behind this pillowy beauty is to call attention to the estimated 48,000,000 plastic bottles thrown away every day in the United States.
