Perils of Indian Women

Perils of Indian Women | Eco-feminism & the Ecology of Fear | Scoop.it

Taboos and Threats: Male elders of their caste decreed that village women working at nearby meat-processing factories should leave their jobs. The reason they gave was that women at home would be better protected from the sexual advances of outside men. A bigger issue lay beneath the surface: The women’s earnings had begun to undermine the old order.

Climate-Change pressures increase femicide & sale of girls

Climate-Change pressures increase femicide & sale of girls | Eco-feminism & the Ecology of Fear | Scoop.it

Newborn baby girls are for sale in the poverty stricken Indian state of Telengana. Even babies in government-run shelters are available. In the poverty stricken villages, many are willing to give up a baby girl in exchange for money to meet their basic needs. Many families in India have a preference for boys; no baby boys are for sale. The middlemen in the trade say that the girls could be bought for as low as 5,000 rupees ($80).
