The Beyond the New manifesto, which will be published in full on Dezeen tomorrow on the eve of the Salone del Mobile in Milan, will call on the profession to abandon its "obsession with the new for the sake of the new".

Dutch engineering student Boyan Slat created The Ocean Cleanup concept with the aim of clearing the oceans of their plastic gyres – floating islands made of millions of pieces of waste that accumulate where currents converge.

British artist Steve Messam has installed a weight-bearing bridge across a stream in the UK's Lake District using 20,000 sheets of bright red paper. Commissioned by the Lakes Culture tourism organisation, the Paperbridge is a self-supporting arch weighted on either side with steel gabions filled with local stone.
