The Design Museum Dharavi (Mumbai, India)

The Design Museum Dharavi (Mumbai, India) | What's new in Design + Architecture? | Scoop.it
An informal urban settlement in the middle of Mumbai, Dharavi is best known as the location of the Oscar-winning movie Slumdog Millionaire. In (mis)representing Dharavi as the world's largest slum, however, the film did nothing for the attributed one-dimensional stereotypes of inadequate housing, poor sanitation, infrequent access to water and electricity, and abject poverty. While certainly somewhat true, these slum clichés do not tell the complete story: Dharavi has a remarkable number of potters, tailors, carpenters, and all manner of crafters - some 20,000 makers, in fact; something unacknowledged not only by glazed, poverty-porn Western eyes, but by the rest of Mumbai too. Which is precisely where Design Museum Dharavi comes in. (Icon magazine)

Print is far from dead at XL-Muse’s destination bookstore

Print is far from dead at XL-Muse’s destination bookstore | What's new in Design + Architecture? | Scoop.it

HANGZHOU – Tweets and texts are distracting today’s teens from serious reading, and if they are impelled to buy books they are likely to do so online. Traditional bookstores are taking a hit, even in China, where respect for literacy is deep-rooted. The present situation persuaded a teacher-turned-publisher to envision a bookstore that would be a destination – for socializing as well as browsing. He commissioned three Zhongshuge stores in his native Shanghai from Li Xiang, who heads local architectural firm XL-Muse, and then asked her to go a step further and create China's most beautiful bookstore in the ancient city of Hangzhou.

“Design has nothing to do with art”: Design legend Milton Glaser dispels a universal misunderstanding

“Design has nothing to do with art”: Design legend Milton Glaser dispels a universal misunderstanding | What's new in Design + Architecture? | Scoop.it

Design is not art. It’s a distinction understood by practicing designers, but it still eludes many. In an Oct. 29 talk at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, the 87-year-old graphic design legend Milton Glaser gave the best definition of the practice of design. “Design is the process of going from an existing condition to a preferred one,” said the 2010 National Medal of Arts recipient. “Observe that there’s no relationship to art.”

Comment les designers conçoivent la cuisine du futur

Comment les designers conçoivent la cuisine du futur | What's new in Design + Architecture? | Scoop.it

China Begins Testing Elevated "Straddling Bus" That Goes Over Cars Driving on the Road

China Begins Testing Elevated "Straddling Bus" That Goes Over Cars Driving on the Road | What's new in Design + Architecture? | Scoop.it

Many countries deal with the same traffic problem of having too many cars on the road. To combat this, China has created an out-of-the-box solution to ease some of these crowding issues. Known as a “straddling bus,” this elevated transportation system—a hybrid of an automobile and train—is tall enough so cars can drive underneath it. The unconventional vehicle was first unveiled in 2010 and then again in May of 2016 at Beijing’s 19th International High-Tech Expo. Since then, a prototype of the bus has been constructed, and it recently took its first test ride in the northeastern city of Qinhuangdao in the Hebei province. The large, spacious interior is 72-feet long and 25-feet wide with the capacity to carry up to 300 passengers. It sits at roughly 16 feet tall—with seven feet of space underneath—and moves via tracks that are embedded in the street.
