China Begins Testing Elevated "Straddling Bus" That Goes Over Cars Driving on the Road

China Begins Testing Elevated "Straddling Bus" That Goes Over Cars Driving on the Road | What's new in Design + Architecture? | Scoop.it

Many countries deal with the same traffic problem of having too many cars on the road. To combat this, China has created an out-of-the-box solution to ease some of these crowding issues. Known as a “straddling bus,” this elevated transportation system—a hybrid of an automobile and train—is tall enough so cars can drive underneath it. The unconventional vehicle was first unveiled in 2010 and then again in May of 2016 at Beijing’s 19th International High-Tech Expo. Since then, a prototype of the bus has been constructed, and it recently took its first test ride in the northeastern city of Qinhuangdao in the Hebei province. The large, spacious interior is 72-feet long and 25-feet wide with the capacity to carry up to 300 passengers. It sits at roughly 16 feet tall—with seven feet of space underneath—and moves via tracks that are embedded in the street.

He was accepting the preeminent architecture award, the Pritzker Prize, which honored Barragán for his “commitment to architecture as a sublime act of the poetic imagination” and his “gardens, plazas, and fountains of haunting beauty.”
