African cinema: The Art of Collaboration

African cinema: The Art of Collaboration | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

Current African cinema has been booming in recent years. Film festivals in connection with producers and distributors of these new pictures play a steadily increasing role. They are stepping stones for the “Post Independence Generation”  of young, African film makers, platforms for exchange and birth places for new project ideas. The last decade has seen a surge in the establishment of new festivals and film schools.

The new ECAL type foundry is online!

The new ECAL type foundry is online! | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

With this website created in collaboration with Swiss Typefaces, ECAL is probably the first university in the world to have launched an online type foundry, allowing direct access for anyone to a selection of typefaces, all designed by students.

Thanks to renowned professors such as François Rappo, Aurèle Sack, Ian Party, Gilles Gavillet and Ludovic Balland, and prestigious visiting lecturers such as Frederik Berlaen, Kai Bernau, Peter Bilak, Laurenz Brunner, Christian Schwartz, Paul Barnes and Emmanuel Rey, ECAL has been able to boast a solid reputation in Type Design teaching for several years.

Fonts designed by students during the Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Art Direction courses (or for the diploma) are regularly used for ECAL corporate communications (posters, invitations cards, catalogues...), and because of this usage, people often ask to us how to acquire these typefaces, in particular our Headline Fonts.

This website is here to answer those requests. ECAL is proud to be able to share these fonts with the largest possible audience and to offer a platform for our students, deserving heirs of a typically Swiss know-how.

How one of the best films at Sundance was shot using an iPhone 5S

How one of the best films at Sundance was shot using an iPhone 5S | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

Tangerine, a breakout hit from this year’s Sundance Film Festival, is full of surprises. There’s the subject matter: transgender prostitutes working in a not-so glamorous part of Hollywood. And there are the characters: flinty, funny, nobody’s victim. But the story behind the camera is as surprising as what’s in front of it. Particularly because the camera used to shoot Tangerine was the iPhone 5S.

Robert Heinecken: Paraphotographer

Robert Heinecken: Paraphotographer | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

Los Angeles-based conceptualist Robert Heinecken (1931-2006) worked primarily with photography but rarely used a camera. His cross-disciplinary work employed found images culled from mass media that were then reanimated through a variety of materials and techniques—gelatin-silver prints, collage, photo-sculpture, canvases covered with photographic emulsion, among them. A self-described “paraphotographer,” Heinecken’s expanded notion of photography is evident in his oft-cited comment: “The photograph is not a picture, but an object about something.”

The gory and grotesque art of Soviet antireligious propaganda

The gory and grotesque art of Soviet antireligious propaganda | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

The images below are from the Soviet anti-religious magazine, Bezbozhnik, which translates to “Atheist” or “The Godless.” It ran from 1922 to 1941, and its daily edition, “The Godless at the Workplace,” ran from 1923 to 1931. The scathing publication was founded by the League of Militant Atheists, an organization of the Soviet Communist Party members, members of its youth league, workers and veterans, so while it was in many ways a party project, it was not state-sponsored satire.

ECAL Interaction Design students' innovative Beijing documentation

ECAL Interaction Design students' innovative Beijing documentation | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

After a holiday I usually struggle into the arrivals lounge with carrier bags brimming with tat, a couple of sandy disposable cameras, an empty wallet and an Instagram account groaning under the weight of all the gratuitous exotic photographs I’ve inflicted on my friends. I don’t often spend my time coming up with innovative alternative ways to log my trip. Which is the difference between me and the BA Media and Interaction Design students at ECAL, or the École Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne in Switzerland.

Recently Rejected

Recently Rejected | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

Artist and art director Mario Hugo, who founded the agency Hugo & Marie, knew that he wasn’t the only designer sitting on troves of unseen work. Hoping to give unfinished work a proper burial, he sent out a call to designers and illustrators and gathered projects that had been rejected or never published. Recently Rejected, Hugo’s newly launched website, shines a spotlight on this underappreciated material—and much of it is beautiful. From rejected covers for Wired magazine to unseen T-shirt graphics to project sketches for Coldplay, the images on the site are comforting reminders that rejection and failure are inevitable parts of the creative process. This can be easy to forget when designers usually only share polished final products.
