The Rise of the Artisanal Magazine

The Rise of the Artisanal Magazine | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

The magazine might not be dying, but big business would probably say the magazine is obsolete. However, that thinking doesn’t totally match up with the current boom of impeccably laid out, limited-run magazines that are being put out independently of big publishers like Hearst or Condé Nast. How can we be hearing the death rattle of the magazine if we’ve got a stack of pricey indie rags piling up on our coffee tables?

“I have had several emailed PDF’s lately that started off well but then went on far too long, and the standard naturally dropped. We tend to judge someone from their worst piece of work.”

Lartigue In Colors at La Maison Européenne de la Photographie

Lartigue In Colors at La Maison Européenne de la Photographie | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

“Why do we like Lartigue so much? And even more in color? Is it the “easy” seduction of a colorful palette? Its immediately sensuality? Its musicality? All of that, of course, but it’s also something else… I often say that Lartigue’s greatest talent was getting everybody to agree. The definition of happiness varies from person to person, but Lartigue is considered the ‘photographer of happiness’ almost unanimously. In reality, things are a little more complicated. Lartigue is neither smug nor a happy fool. He shows himself to be deeply torn between two contradictory currents: his amazement at life and beauty on the one hand, and his despair over his inability to prevent their disappearance. That despair is what makes him an artist, what he called his, ‘little sickness.’”

Tribute to Pierre de Fenoÿl | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

Iconographer, curator, art buyer, founder of the Galerie Rencontre and the Agence Vu (now Viva), Pierre de Fenoÿl was appointed, in 1976, the first director of France’s National Photography Foundation, then  advisor to the Centre Pompidou’s photography department. Pierre was extremely talented. I spent a lot of time with him in the 1970s and early ‘80s. We shared a mentor, Roméo Martinez.

South Korean designer Haein Song on the craft of bookbinding

South Korean designer Haein Song on the craft of bookbinding | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

Haein first got involved with the bookbinding process when she began to feel that the making process was missing from her practice. “I was originally trained as a graphic designer in South Korea then came to London to complete my MA in Communication Design at Central Saint Martins,” she explains. “Throughout this period my interest in craft married with language – hence written words and books – leading me to the world of bookbinding and artists’ books.

Libération nouvelle formule, mirage ou réalité augmentée ?

Libération nouvelle formule, mirage ou réalité augmentée ? | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

ECAL Library's insight:

Libération French newspaper, yet figurehead of an ambitious press media always ready to question his medium, has yet totally missed his digital revolution.

Neil Winokur is an archetypal urban specimen, late twentieth-century model. Book: Silver Screen by Tama Hochbaum published by Daylight

Book: Silver Screen by Tama Hochbaum published by Daylight | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

Tama Hochbaum's mother came of age in the 1930s during the Golden Age of the Silver Screen. As a young woman, one of her favorite pastimes was going to the movies. During the last years of her life as she suffered from increasingly poor health with the onset of Alzheimer's, she found great comfort in watching re-broadcasts of the movies of her youth. Hochbaum cared for her mother with daily phone calls and visits as often as she could. Mother and daughter stayed connected by watching movies simultaneously on The Turner Classic Movies station that was on Channel 67 in both their neighborhoods Hochbaum's in North Carolina, her mother's in New York.

Strasbourg : Joseph Heinrich Darchinger Wirtschaftswunder

Strasbourg : Joseph Heinrich Darchinger Wirtschaftswunder | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

La Chambre in Strasbourg, France, is holding an exhibition of the color work of Joseph Heinrich Darchinger, the first since his death in 2013. It was no more than eight years after the surrender of the Nazi government when Dardinger set out on his photographic journey through the West of a divided Germany. The bombs of World War II had reduced the country’s major cities to deserts of rubble. Yet his pictures show scarcely any signs of the downfall of a civilization. Not that the photographer was manipulating the evidence: he simply recorded what he saw.

Checking into Honeymoon Hotel with Juno Calypso's alter-ego Joyce

Checking into Honeymoon Hotel with Juno Calypso's alter-ego Joyce | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

“I build sets and create scenes for her,” Juno explains on her website, “imaginary bedrooms in which I perform critical studies into modern rites of seduction and beauty, and the laboured construction of femininity. Objects once perceived as radical, innovative, fun and nutritious – an electronic anti-wrinkle mask, computer equipment from the 1980s, baby oil, a tin of cold meat – have become joyless and oppressive. Joyce appears alone, consumed by artifice; her glazed appearance acting as a mirror to the exhaustion felt whilst bearing the dead weight of constructed femininity.”
