Daniel Franke & Cedric Kiefer "unnamed soundsculpture" and Brian Oakes "Marie"

Daniel Franke & Cedric Kiefer "unnamed soundsculpture" and Brian Oakes "Marie" | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

These two pieces use a Kinect and a dancer’s performance as the starting point for abstract imagery. Both are lovely, but the approaches evoke very different results.

unnamed soundsculpture by Daniel Franke & Cedric Kiefer
Franke and Kiefer’s dancer is the basis for a constantly evolving sand sculpture. My favorite parts are where big movements capture frozen echoes of the body and they hold in place for a split second before falling away.

Between: Beautifully Braided Books

Between: Beautifully Braided Books | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

We’ve seen amazing book carvings by Emma Taylor, Kylie Stillman, Frank Halmans, and Guy Laramee but now comes a series of book art that’s only temporary: book braiding. Math Monahan braids the pages of a book, similar to the way a french braid is done, adding a few more pages to each group as it gets folded into the braid. The result is an awesomely clean looking design that unfolds itself over time. One of his circular installations is in the Penny Stamps Graduate Studio and the other in the Hatcher Graduate library of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he is currently working toward a Master of Fine Arts. Ironically the one in the library unbraided more, which Math hypothesizes is so that the books could be closer to the other books surrounding them!

AuraFlora Beta 1 is a scaled down version of AuraFlora for development purposes. The micro controller is an Arduino Uno R3. The purpose of this device is to be a first prototype for AuraFlora, and provide a platform on which to develop code. AF B1 has 2 inputs and 3 outputs. Inputs are in the form of a PIR motion detector and a Pingback distance sensor. If a servo was added to the ping back sensor, the machine may be able to “see” by using SAR – synthetic aperture radar.

Marbles, Photo Series Focuses on the Testicles of European Greek Statues | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

Marbles” is a 2013 photo series by London-based photographer Ingrid Berthon-Moine that focuses specifically on the testicles of marble Greek statues found throughout Europe. Feature Shoot states the “work explores masculinity in the 21st century, both the representation of it and the idea of ornamental masculinity which until now had been largely ‘reserved’ to the female gender. It also looks at how masculinity has shifted over time, and how men have had to redefine their identity as society changes.”

FLUIDIC – A Sculpture in Motion: An Interactive Field of 12,000 Spheres Illuminated by Lasers

FLUIDIC – A Sculpture in Motion: An Interactive Field of 12,000 Spheres Illuminated by Lasers | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

FLUIDIC is the result of a unique collaboration between Hyundai’s Advanced Design Center and Berlin-based studio WHITEvoid. The interactive light sculpture is made from 12,000 suspended spheres that act as three dimensional pixels, or voxels. Surrounded by 3D cameras the piece can sense viewer’s motions which are then translated into light patterns, but amazingly the light supplied to the individual voxels is fully external. An array of high-speed lasers project into the cloud to create the dynamic visuals in real-time.
