Afghan weavers have been incorporating contemporary images of war into their rugs since 1979, when Soviet forces occupied major areas of the country. Following 9/11 and the invasion of Afghanistan, helicopters, hand grenades, and even predator drones have begun to feature in the intricate designs. Online business WarRug.com has been curating some of the best examples from the region since the mid 1990s, with prices ranging from $300 up to several thousand.

For the past few years, Hermès has been offering a unique sensory experience with a special series of its iconic silk squares designed by some of the great artists of our time, from Josef Albers to Daniel Buren. More recently, Hiroshi Sugimoto, with his “shadow colors,” brought us the Tokyo dawns he captured every morning with his Polaroid camera. The series was exhibited at the 2013 Rencontres d’Arles.

For the 4th edition, Julio Le Parc, a major artist whose work has been featured recently at the Palais de Tokyo and the Grand palais, has taken the French manufacturer’s silk square and composed an ode to color with “Variations autour de La Longue Marche.”

"My design has always had a good amount of math behind it,” says graphic designer Mark Gonyea. “It's an old design mantra but limitations really do promote creativity.” Gonyea's interest in sequential designs--like the ones seen in these posters--heightened when one of his abstract comics from 2000 appeared in an art book. In the piece, Squares in Squares, each panel acquired a new geometric shape. “It had no narrative other than the increasing complexity of shapes,” Gonyea tells Co.Design.
