photographer Dane Shitagi's project shows ballet dancers anywhere but on stage | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

For 12 years, photographer Dane Shitagi has been photographing ballerinas in unusual environments such as a waterfall in Hawaii, a Manhattan fire escape or a Toronto streetcar.

He has now amassed more than 1,000 images of strong and graceful ballet dancers for The Ballerina Project posing anywhere but onstage.

Unencumbered by roles to perform, make-up or costumes, the dancers pose with loose flowing hair and simple leotards or dresses, showcasing their effortless poise even as gritty city streets loom around them.

'Each photograph is a collaborative work of dance, fashion design and photography played out against the city's landscape,' Shitagi says.

He works with professional ballerinas, some retired and some currently at top ballet companies, and does about 40 photo shoots a year with dancers.

The Ballerina Project is one of the internet's most popular dance-related photography sites - the Instagram account currently has almost 240,000 subscribers, the Facebook page has almost 800,000 likes and the Tumblr account has all the latest images.
