Without much public attention, a remarkable thing is happening. As libraries around the world digitize their photographic collections they lose the funding to store their physical archives.  Only a handful of libraries have the resources to store, catalog and maintain these irreplaceable images and the Huntington Library is one.  Located in San Marino, California, The Huntington is a leading research library with a collection of over a million images, many dating back to the late eighteen hundreds. There are images of every kind spanning the nineteenth to the twenty-first century.  Because the Huntington is a research library most people will never see more than a fraction of their collection but for those who have the opportunity to study here the depth and breadth of the collection is astonishing. I spoke with Jennifer A. Watts, Curator of Photographs to get some idea of the scope of the collection and the things people use it for.

The Museum of Modern Art Library is frequented by artists who use the collection for research and inspiration. For this exhibition, a number of artists were asked to select a favorite item from the library collection and respond to a questionnaire written by library staff. Reading List includes the selected materials, accompanied by the artists’ explanations of why they chose the materials and what they mean within the context of their artistic practices. Selections will rotate halfway through the exhibition’s duration in order to feature a wide range of artists.

Andreas Züst was a legendary figure both within Switzerland and the European art world at large. He was a Renaissance man with an insatiable appetite for knowledge and he was a lover of books. His library represented all of these passions in some 12,000 volumes on topics such as the weather, geology, astronomy, physics, botany, the history of art, anthropology, polar expeditions, photography, painting, literature, music, kitsch, UFOs, Hell’s Angels, and the myriad other subjects that follow.

This library is open to the public as of 17 November 2012 until 31 January 2013 at CAN (Centre d'art Neuchâtel, Switzerland).

Hyundai Card Design Library opens in Seoul | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

A library dedicated to design has opened in South Korea's capital city, offering access to over 11,000 books chosen by an international team of curators and critics.

The Hyundai Card Design Library is backed by the country's largest credit card issuer, which claims "there are few design museums and libraries in Korea, whereas Korean colleges every year churn out more than 30,000 novice designers."
