Eckhaus Latta SS17 campaign features real couples having sex shot by Heji Shin (NSFW) | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

New York-based fashion label Eckhaus Latta has launched its SS17 campaign that features photographs of real couples having sex while wearing its latest designs. The campaign was shot by Heji Shin who, in 2011, gained recognition for photographing a German sex education book for teenagers. The casting, by Sam Muglia, sees real-life couples from a wide range of ethnicities and sexual orientations modelling for the series. The art direction by Eric Wren Office, design director of _Art Forum_ , sees the most explicit parts of the images pixelated and the models bathed in natural light.

How Man Ray helped Guy Bourdin put shock, suspense and surrealism into fashion photography

How Man Ray helped Guy Bourdin put shock, suspense and surrealism into fashion photography | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

As you possibly know, it was surrealism that provided the primary conceptual influence during these formative years. After continuously knocking on but being turned away from the door of his idol, Man Ray, Bourdin, who received his photographic training as a cadet in the air force, was eventually permitted to enter the artist's studio, and some time later, his confidence. As a veteran of several avant-garde movements, including Dada and Surrealism, Man Ray provided a perfect example for the development of Bourdin's own unorthodox conception of art making.

Melvin Sokolsky

Melvin Sokolsky | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

This iconic Bubble series was created by fashion photographer Melvin Sokolskyfor the Harper’s Bazaar 1963 Spring Collection.

Haunted by a particular image from Hieronymous Bosch’s ‘The Garden of Delights,’ Sokolsky experienced a re-occurring dream in which he saw himself floating inside a bubble across exotic landscapes. Inspired, he quickly used the idea for the series. The Bubble was crafted to emulate a Faberge Egg, for which Sokolsky had great admiration for its design and workmanship.

Dmitry Bukreev (ÉCAL, Switzerland)

Russian designer Dmitry Bukreev draws a direct line between his portfolio work and Soviet Constructivist art and design of the 1920s. 'I used the model of Constructivism and updated it through a fashion catalogue of an imaginary designer named Varst,' he says, describing how his alter ego exists in a world of strict lines and geometric shapes. 'It's a work of art direction, styling and visual experiments,' he says.

Florian Joahn’s photographs bridge the erotic and surreal

Florian Joahn’s photographs bridge the erotic and surreal | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

Fashion photographer Florian Joahn grew up in a remote industrial small town in east Germany. Somewhere in between starting off as graphic designer, moving to Ghana where he worked as a teacher for deaf children, before embarking on a five year art education in Amsterdam to become an installation artist, Florian learnt that fashion photography was his calling. It was a decision that sent him packing his suitcases once again, this time to relocate to London. “Photography is the medium I move the most naturally in and find it the easiest to express myself,” he says. “I have a high respect for fashion design and love the craftsmanship of it, but I also realised that fashion comes to live when you put it in a context, if it is on a person on the street or a model in front of the camera. Those are the moments I am interested in.

David Luraschi: Back to the Streets

David Luraschi: Back to the Streets | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

“There’s too much information in one’s expression,” says French-American photographer David Luraschi, whose ongoing series of alternative street-style portraits are surreptitious snapshots taken from behind. Joining a raft of instant-image-makers including Daniel Arnold and Dave Krugman, Luraschi, who has been described as the “Sartorialist of sadness,” distinguishes himself from his peers by providing a counterpoint to the self-consciously posed shots peppering fashion blogs every season.

ECAL Library's insight:

David Luraschi completed the master's programme in Art Direction at ECAL in 2013.

Bill Cunningham and Editta Sherman: Who is he? Who is she?

Bill Cunningham and Editta Sherman: Who is he? Who is she? | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

In a happy accident on a Manhattan sidewalk in 1978, Bill Cunningham snapped photographs of Greta Garbo, oblivious to her identity, instead attracted to her distinct, nutria coat; countless photographs and over three decades later Cunningham’s keen eye has made him into a New York fashion institution. His weekly New York Times “Styles” section staples “On the Street” and “Evening Hours” are a bi-weekly digest of who’s who? in the Manhattan upper crust andwhat’s trending? on city streets. Prior to the Times, however, Cunningham found his two greatest muses, the city itself, and a close friend and fellow photographer, Editta Sherman, both of whom are the stars of the New-York Historical Society’s upcoming exhibition “Bill Cunningham: Façades.”

L'art de la SAPE

L'art de la SAPE | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

ECAL Library's insight:

The Sape is not only a fashion story but also codes of life skills and political awareness. Sappers are distinguished as much for their style as their ideals.

FashGif: The Tumblr Phenomenon

FashGif: The Tumblr Phenomenon | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

Melbourne-based Greta Larkins, who has animated stills for the likes of Kenzo, Vogue Hommes Japan and Nicola Formichetti, gained a cult following with her tongue-in-cheek take on runway imagery. Last year saw “GIF” named the Oxford Dictionaries USA word of the year, as the ever-booming format became the subject of social media platforms Paddle8 and Tumblr’s Moving the Still exhibition. “I love the comments people leave when they re-post the GIFs,” says Larkins, whose satirical eye has brought Giambattista Valli sheepskin bag to life and a Marc Jacobs sweater dispense endless cans of cola.“One of my favorites to date was along the lines of, 'I don't usually like fashion but this is awesome.'”
