Last week I was invited to speak at a TEDx event, and today I turned that offer down. It’s not that I don’t like TED — I think the organisers have done a great service to popularise thought-provoking ideas in an easily-digestible format. And the subject of the TEDx event, centring on science and society, is definitely close to my heart. But the problem I discovered is this: TED doesn’t pay its speakers. (...) None of the speakers — at TED or its little sister TEDx — get paid. This is despite the fact that tickets to a full-scale TED event cost something in the realms of $6,000.

The École de Communication Visuelle has invited Jean François Porchez to speak about Typofonderie and ZeCraft recent projects. Jean François is in charge of the Typography master launched in 2012 atECV. The lecture will be held in the same place as the TDC59 exhibition that is also being organized byECV. If you like typography, there are two reasons to be there next Wednesday 5th June 2013. The events are part of the Designer’s Days 2013. It’s a free event, but you have to book by email. If you are interested to visit the TDC exhibit, it’s better to arrive at least 1 hour before.

Late afternoon sessions were over on the first day of TEDGlobal, and John Maeda, president of the Rhode Island School of Design, was walking against the flow of the large and noisy crowd gathered at the Edinburgh International Conference Center. Maeda and his frequent writing collaborator, a Stanford MBA and RISD executive named Becky Bermont, were looking for a quiet place to talk. They eventually found one in a windowless side hallway and invited me to join them.
