Reproduced here are a bunch of scans from a fascinating erotic alphabet book printed in the Soviet Union circa 1931, made to combat adult illiteracy. By the sculptor and future People’s Artist of the USSR Sergei Merkurov [Сергей Меркуров], no less.

Poussée par le désir de s’extraire du quotidien et lassée du minimalisme qui envahissait Londres [où elle était installée], la graphiste salvadorienne Frida Larios s’est lancée dans l’élaboration d’un “nouveau langage maya”. Elle a conçu un système visuel et conceptuel inspiré du système d’écriture précolombien. Pour cela, elle a redessiné les symboles ancestraux pour les adapter à la vie moderne, en remplaçant certains éléments du signifié par d’autres, identifiables par nos contemporains.


Born in Salvador, Frida Larios graduated in Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. She lives in San Francisco. She is ambassador for INDIGO - ICOGRADA, the international network of indigenous design.
