What were Adrian Frutiger's contributions to typography?

What were Adrian Frutiger's contributions to typography? | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

Could there have been a more influential type designer in the last century? Frutiger didn’t just create the typeface that bears his name. Over the past 60-plus years, he also designed Univers, Avenir, Méridien, Didot, Apollo, Egyptienne,  Rusticana, Serifa and over a hundred other fonts, many of which remain popular to this day. In fact, he has five fonts (Frutiger, Univers, Avenir Next, Avenir and Frutiger Next) in the Top 40 all-time bestsellers list—the only type designer to have enjoyed that level of commercial success.

Largely known for his Oscar-winning set design of Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi flick Alien, the Swiss surrealist artist also had a somewhat fruitful career as a niche artist and collaborator. To mark the year since Giger's passing, New York-based filmmaker ZEV DEANS and Giger's longtime agent, LESLIE BARANY, partnered with the Museum of Arts and Design in New York for a two-day film festival, "The Unseen Cinema of HR Giger," which kicks off May 22.

Thierry Blancpain - Interview

Thierry Blancpain - Interview | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

I’m one half of Grilli Type, an independent Swiss type foundry started in 2009. A friend once described me as an “internet person”, which fits me quite well. I love the intersection of design and technology and all the things made possible by that – like starting a small type foundry while still being students. I studied Visual Communication at the Bern University of the Arts from 2007 to 2010 and have been a freelance web and identity designer before, during and after studying. Now I work full time for Grilli Type. I met my co-founder Noël Leu when he joined our class from ECAL after the first semester. We quickly became friends after I saw him work on a typeface on his first day in school.
