LUDMILA BREDIKHINA — Interview

LUDMILA BREDIKHINA — Interview | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it
When I was a kid I loved the letterings in old Russian books. And during my first 4 years of school in Moscow we had special homework that focused on drawing properly letters and numbers. Everyday we had to copy 50 times a set of characters and I really loved doing that.

Photographer of nudes and Parisian passers-by David Luraschi's Bookshelf | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

Paris-based photographer David Luraschi is as adept at photographing undulating hills as he is sprawling nudes, and he brings his unique perspective to both. You might know him best for his series of photographs of people spotted on the streets of Paris photographed from behind – a project that started on his Instagram and has since been splashed about all over the internet.

This week we asked David to show us his five favourite books and his selection was as diverse as his subject matter. Here he is!

ECAL Interaction Design students' innovative Beijing documentation

ECAL Interaction Design students' innovative Beijing documentation | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

After a holiday I usually struggle into the arrivals lounge with carrier bags brimming with tat, a couple of sandy disposable cameras, an empty wallet and an Instagram account groaning under the weight of all the gratuitous exotic photographs I’ve inflicted on my friends. I don’t often spend my time coming up with innovative alternative ways to log my trip. Which is the difference between me and the BA Media and Interaction Design students at ECAL, or the École Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne in Switzerland.

Crisp and vibrant design work from ECAL graduate Clement Rouzaud

Crisp and vibrant design work from ECAL graduate Clement Rouzaud | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

Another talented graduate from ECAL in Lausanne, Clement Rouzaud’s portfolio is a bounty of solid graphic design work. It’s the kind of clean and considered work we’ve come to expect from the Swiss design hub, and it’s Clement’s use of colours that we’re especially fond of. Much of the designer’s work is poster-based showcasing exhibitions for art and furniture shows, where plain sans serif typefaces are interspersed with stock-like imagery and graphic flourishes.

The new ECAL type foundry is online!

The new ECAL type foundry is online! | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

With this website created in collaboration with Swiss Typefaces, ECAL is probably the first university in the world to have launched an online type foundry, allowing direct access for anyone to a selection of typefaces, all designed by students.

Thanks to renowned professors such as François Rappo, Aurèle Sack, Ian Party, Gilles Gavillet and Ludovic Balland, and prestigious visiting lecturers such as Frederik Berlaen, Kai Bernau, Peter Bilak, Laurenz Brunner, Christian Schwartz, Paul Barnes and Emmanuel Rey, ECAL has been able to boast a solid reputation in Type Design teaching for several years.

Fonts designed by students during the Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Art Direction courses (or for the diploma) are regularly used for ECAL corporate communications (posters, invitations cards, catalogues...), and because of this usage, people often ask to us how to acquire these typefaces, in particular our Headline Fonts.

This website is here to answer those requests. ECAL is proud to be able to share these fonts with the largest possible audience and to offer a platform for our students, deserving heirs of a typically Swiss know-how.

Alma Cecilia Suarez

Alma Cecilia Suarez | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

“Jannis” is a photographic atlas portraying a Chinese young man who migrated to Singapore. In search of identity, he oscillates between native culture and western influences. This multi-faceted person is portrayed by the play of contrasts between archive images, portraits and writing. These types bind to form a complex imaging of this person. Jannis plays with its image and affirm himself through it; its reflection has a universal character.

ECAL Library's insight:

Alma Cecilia Suarez completed the Bachelor's programme in Photography at ECAL last June 2014.

Anaïs Boileau photographs sun-seekers in this fun series

Anaïs Boileau photographs sun-seekers in this fun series | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

I’m loth to comment on summer’s swift disappearance or the vague possibility that it might get warm again in the coming weeks, but how can I miss the opportunity which this series by Anaïs Boileau has so generously handed me? This brilliant photo-series examines the women who live for a tan, happily sunning themselves with foil trays pressed to their chins and eye-protectors plastered to their sockets. There’s something gently teasing and kind of funny but also really well-constructed about her images – the props make for a natural frame so you’re confronted with a very immediate manifestation of our society’s obsession with bronzed skin, which seems more ridiculous the longer you think about it.
