The Middle East Revealed A Female Perspective

The Middle East Revealed A Female Perspective | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

Photography from the Middle East receives fairly little attention in the United States, and our image of the region is fashioned by journalists covering conflicts that date back to colonial times. Women are invariably represented as veiled, oppressed, deprived of their freedom by a patriarchal society, or as an untouchable beauty with dark, penetrating eyes peering out from a chador. Between exoticism and cultural simplification, the Middle East of women is codified to the point of caricature.

When graphic design meets culture

When graphic design meets culture | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

Recently, Mohammad Sharaf, a graphic designer from Kuwait, designed an image of a veiled woman on a bicycle with a man riding in the back. The design was a clear reference to a recent decision by the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice in which women were given permission to drive motorcycles as long as they were accompanied by a male guardian. Titled “Allowed,” the artwork created a splash on social media sites and even in the international press.

Photographs of the Middle East regularly make the front pages of newspapers. But photography by contemporary artists from the region is woefully under-represented in Western galleries. An exhibition at the Victoria and Albert museum in London is an attempt to address this imbalance. “Light from the Middle East” is the first major show of contemporary photography by artists from the region which explores ideas of politics, culture and religion from North Africa to Central Asia.

RIGHT-TO-LEFT: Arabic and Iranian Visual Cultures | What's new in Visual Communication? | Scoop.it

The project RIGHT-TO-LEFT focuses on what is currently happening in the Middle East in terms of visual culture and society. The exhibition features over 40 artists and graphic designers, and displays artworks, installations, and hundreds of posters, partly commissioned for the occasion of the Berlin show. The exhibited art and design works are both innovative and forward-looking, presenting cross-cultural references and styles ranging from experimental typography and type-design to street art and graffiti. They often merge Latin and Arab/Persian scripts in sensual, beautiful ensembles with multiple layers of meanings. Poetry, metaphors, and references to the present political situation in the Middle East are recurrently used in the designs.
