The term “clone” is clouded by controversy and has no clear definition, so it’s not a very useful way to describe anything. Perhaps you’re asking whether Akkurat was blatantly copied to create the Apple Watch typeface. I don’t think we can answer that question with any confidence.

I'd seen this graphic debunked, but it wasn't particularly rigorous, so I decided it was finally time to sit down and answer this for myself definitively.
In researching this, the first thing to go looking for seemed to be whether or not the designer of the logo, Rob Janoff, has spoken about his process. Indeed, Janoffhas addressed in an interview the evolution of the shape:

Jonathan Zufi, who runs the Shrine of Apple website, has spent the last several years collecting and photographing Apple’s huge array of products, from rare releases to everyday items. He’s amassed 150,000 photos, 650 of which will appear in his new 326-page book, "Iconic: A Photographic Tribute to Apple Innovation."

You’ve almost certainly never heard of Peter Belanger, but you’ve definitely seen his photographs. In fact, you may even see his work every day, and it’s likely that you own some of his most famous subjects. Belanger is the man behind some of Apple’s most iconic product images, a San Francisco-based product photographer at the top of his field. Apple is but one of his clients — he’s done work for everyone from eBay and Nike to Pixar and Square — and we sat down with Peter to talk about his work, his background, and some very, very expensive gear.
