The e-textbook transformation

The e-textbook transformation | ebook publishing ideas | Scoop.it

A new wave of e-textbooks is giving students more than just words and a few hotlinks on a digital page. Publishers over the last few years have been adding video, interactive maps and gamified quizzes designed to engage students more deeply in their learning.

A transformation which is not a revolution. It will take time and effort.  It's important we give it the space to take its natural course.

Angela C. Dowd's curator insight, July 25, 2014 2:11 PM

Thank you Nik. I like reading about innovations like e-textbook transformation that make learning more accessible to all students.

Raj Shekhar Mishra's curator insight, March 20, 3:07 AM

To engage students more deeply in their learning publishers are making the textbook a hands-on activity by adding video, interactive maps and gamified quizzes.  The goal is not simply to replace traditional textbooks with e-books but to fundamentally change teaching and learning .The best learning strategy is the multi-modal approach—you can hear it, you can see it, you can manipulate and interact with the content.

Self-publishing doesn't mean an inferior product, it simply means that you have more control over you book, the contents, the design, the timeline, the marketing, than when using an old fashioned publishing company. You can even enter your book in contests... For more info on self publishing contact me at http://debbistocco.com

It has been nearly three years since the FCC and Education Secretary Arne Duncan rolled out the Digital Textbook Playbook and challenged schools to go digital within five years. It’s safe to say schools are not there yet. While going digital looks certain, arrival in two years looks doubtful.

Oxford, Oxfordshire (PRWEB UK) 9 July 2014 -- Oxford University Press has collaborated with Microsoft to make its enhanced e-books solution, Oxford Learner’s Bookshelf, available through Office 365, a SharePoint app. The app transforms Oxford’s coursebooks and Readers for learning English into smart digital books with a balance of interactivity that encourages students to study independently at home, and tools that help teachers to engage students in the classroom.

A very interesting development from Oxford University Press. If you want to use the books on your iPad, it seems you have to first download the "Oxford Learning Bookshelf" app (free: https://itunes.apple.com/app/oxfordlearnersbookshelf/id617832312) and then within in the app you can get the books. Some books appear to be available only for institutions, and as yet I can't find a way to be able to evaluate them.

The Book and I: How the iPad has changed my reading life - TUAW | ebook publishing ideas | Scoop.it

"Last week, I picked up a copy of The Long Earthby Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter at the library. The book was sitting there on the shelf. I had heard some reasonably good buzz about it. So when it caught my eye, I did something I haven't done in a while. I checked out a dead-tree version.

I also did something I had never done before. As I was reading the book, I stumbled across an unfamiliar word and, rather hilariously, ended up tapping the printed page until it finally occurred to me that the book wasn't going to offer me built-in dictionary and Wikipedia access."
