Waterstones Closes OverDrive-Powered eBookstore, Hands Customers to Kobo | The Digital Reader | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
For as long as UK bookseller Waterstones sold Kindle hardware, it also ran its own ebookstore where it sold Epub and audiobooks through an OverDrive-powered ebookstore. But then the Kindle displays were chucked last October, and now the ebook...

A library of mostly unread books is far more inspiring than a library of books already read. There's nothing more exciting than finishing a book, and walking over to your shelves to figure out what you're going to read next.

'People are hungry for real bookstores': Judy Blume on why US indie booksellers are thriving

'People are hungry for real bookstores': Judy Blume on why US indie booksellers are thriving | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
At 78, the multimillion-selling author has begun a new career, opening her own bookshop – and joining a business sector that’s flourishing again in the US
She might be a beloved and bestselling author of classic children’s books from Forever to Blubber, but Judy Blume says she wakes up every day “and I look to the sky, and I say, ‘whoever’s up there, I thank you for not having to write today’.”
Blume doesn’t have to write because, at 78, she has embarked on a new career: she’s an independent bookseller. Together with her husband, George Cooper, she has opened a small, nonprofit bookshop in Key West, Florida, where she’s working almost every day. And she’s loving it. She had planned “to take a gap year” after she finished writing and promoting her last novel, In the Unlikely Event. “I was going to relax and read and have this whole time with no pressure. And then bingo – the chance comes along to open a bookshop, and there you go. I guess I like that in my life … To learn something new like this, at 78, makes it all the more exciting.”

Adobe DRM: A tip for Kobo e-reader fans and a plea for DRM-control laws

Adobe DRM: A tip for Kobo e-reader fans and a plea for DRM-control laws | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
My Amazon Kindles, even the $290 Oasis, won’t do all-text bold regardless of all the pleas from me and others to jeff@amazon.com and friends. So shouldn’t I use my Kobo Aura H2O instead to enjoy OverDrive library books from the public library here in Alexandria, Virginia, despite the hassles of Adobe DRM? The Kobo e-reader even has a font-weight slider to adjust the level of bold. Ah! But a nasty catch ensnares some and perhaps all Kobo e-reader owners checking out OverDrive books from libraries. The news about Adobe DRM is still dismal for them. Just as Amazon disses e-book-lovers who beg for the bold option, Adobe remains passionately apathetic about all the DRM pain inflicted on us. I don’t care about any new

E-reading with a split screen in Android N

E-reading with a split screen in Android N | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
I’ve been using Android N on my Nexus 6 for the last couple of days, and I rather like it. The vast majority of changes are the minor sort of thing you wouldn’t even notice if you weren’t looking for them. One I particularly like is that you can now access a slim-line, most-important-icons-only version of the pull-down options windowshade.
