Anonymity and the copy editor: Is it time to be recognised?  | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
Here Sara Donaldson looks at the anonymity of the copy editor, why this is generally the case, and asks whether or not they should be acknowledged. Marketing is a challenge for all publishers, including publishers of business content. My bet is the challenges experienced by these specialty publishers and their authors fall in line with those reported in Kelsye Nelson’s 2016 Book Marketing Survey. Among others, Nelson found the following to be the most common book marketing complaints throughout her writing community: Discoverability is difficult in a crowded market Social media is a constant struggle Marketing …

Kindle Create Add-in for Microsoft Word Released

Kindle Create Add-in for Microsoft Word Released | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
There are a hundred and one different ways to make a Kindle ebook.  many start with Microsoft Word, and now there's an option that both begins and ends there. Amazon has released a Kindle Create add-in for MSWord that can be used to make a Kindle ebook. I don't have Word (Libre Office for the win) so I cannot test it. But according to the download page: Format your manuscript by specifying styles like Chapter Title, Chapter Subtitle and others. Save time by using pre-formatted sample pages like book title, copyright, dedication to complete your book. Preview your book any time on as it would look to customers reading on Tablets, Phones and Kindle E-readers before publishing. Work in Microsoft Word and publish your .doc/.docx manuscript with Kindle Direct Publishing. The install file requires a PC with Word 2007 or newer, just not a PC that runs macOS. If you install the add-on, please do let us know how well it works. Amazon P.S. There's no Kindle-making extension for Libre Office, but Writer2Epub fills a similar role. Check These Out!

Strategies to cut overheads in a shrinking book business make a lot of sense - The Idea Logical Company

An inexorable reality of today’s commercial book publishing world is that it is shrinking. Although there have been no obvious signs yet that actual long-form book reading itself has declined (even though that would seem a likely consequence over time of the changed ways we get our reading inputs), the self-publishing and indie segment of …

Kindle AR or Kindle VR? Amazon Kindle team is Hiring an AR/VR Software Engineer | The Digital Reader

Kindle AR or Kindle VR? Amazon Kindle team is Hiring an AR/VR Software Engineer | The Digital Reader | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
Here's a story that sounds like a 1 April joke, but it really is not. When Amazon launched the Kindle in 2007, they used a primitive and limited ebook format to sell ebooks in the Kindle Store. (It didn't even support CSS, much less basic formatting like fonts and word wrapped around images.) Amazon tried to make up for the shortcomings by adding in 2010 the ability to embed audio and video, improving the formatting in late 2011 (KF8), adding animated covers and page backgrounds last year (Kindle in Motion), and adding advanced typography in 2015 (KFX, which brought with it a whole host of DRM and other problems). Only the formatting and typography improvements were widely adopted (to be fair, Kindle in Motion is still in beta), but now Amazon has moved on to the next enhancement to the Kindle. JellyBooks founder Andrew Rhomberg found a job listing yesterday on Amazon.Jobs that drops clues about Amazon's future plans for its ebook platform. Amazon"s Kindle team is looking for "an innovative and results-oriented Software Development Engineer" who has experience with the one or more of the following: Graphics software compositing, video, images with hardware assist. Graphical User Interface toolkit with [...]

Lost under the noise about Kindle VR is the story that Amazon released an update for its iOS app. Kindle for iOS v5.13.1 has a relatively short changelog that lists just one feature, but it's a feature that students and other ardent note-takers will appreciate. Users can now search the notes and highlights they had made in an ebook. All they have to do is recall a word or phrase that's in the note or highlight, type it into the search box,  and they will see a preview of the note in the search results. You can find the app in iTunes. Check These Out!

AAP reports Trade Revenues Up 1%, eBook Revenues Down Nearly 5% in First Quarter | The Digital Reader

AAP reports Trade Revenues Up 1%, eBook Revenues Down Nearly 5% in First Quarter | The Digital Reader | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
The Association of American Publishers released its first report on the US book publishing industry this morning. Their data shows that overall publishing industry revenues increased 4.9% for the first three months of 2017. Note: they have not released data on either January or February 2017, just this data on the first quarter. Trade revenues were up just under a percent, largely due to increase in the adult and YA categories. Curiously, that growth came entirely from hardback revenues, which increased by 8.2%. Both ebook and paperback revenues were down for the quarter (4.7% and 5.3%, respectively). Press release: Revenues for book publishers were $2.33 billion for the first quarter of 2017, a $108 million (4.9%) increase over the first quarter of 2016, according to the StatShot report from Association of American Publishers (AAP). Much of the growth is attributed to increased revenue in the two of the largest categories - Adult books and higher education course materials. StatShot tracks publisher revenue for about 1,200 publishers of trade (fiction/non-fiction/religious), PreK-12 instructional materials, higher education course materials, university presses and professional books. Trade Books In the first quarter, trade books grew by about $13 million (0.9%) compared to the first quarter [...]
