Amazon B&M in New York City | The Digital Reader

Amazon B&M in New York City | The Digital Reader | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
by Rickard Hollick Amazon’s new bricks and mortar store in Manhattan is on the third floor of the Time Warner Center. A few years ago we had a large Borders bookshop in this building, but of course that went the way of all flesh. Here’s a Cnet story with a brief video which gives a good impression of the store. I looked in on Thursday, the day it opened, but couldn’t stay, ‘cos I had to be elsewhere. I went back the next day, and had to stand in line to get in the front door! In this picture you can see the security guard at the door, allowing us in in proportion to shoppers who’d leave. It didn’t last too long: maybe 5 minutes, less if anything. I suspect this must be the first time I’ve ever had to get on line to get into a bookshop — heck, any shop — though I suppose I may have had to queue up at Titus Wilson’s in Sedbergh to buy my schoolbooks at the start of term. I doubt if this Amazon queue at 4.30 on a Friday afternoon indicates an accelerated love of books among my fellow citizens. Most people [...]

How Do Keywords Impact Sales? - Digital Book World

How Do Keywords Impact Sales? - Digital Book World | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
The question I receive most often from publishers is: “How do keywords impact sales?” While adding keywords to book metadata is considered best-practice, publishing businesses are naturally more interested in whether the practice will increase revenue. Keywords in this context are ‘off-page’ keywords, which are sent to retailers in an ONIX feed or added to a book via KDP, Amazon’s dashboard for Kindle books. Keywords aren’t visible to customers, but …

Introducing a tool to help tackle the critical marketing challenge in digital times: what to work on next

Every publisher with more than a handful of published titles has a daily challenge to assign the marketing resources available to where they will do the most good. Efforts no longer have to be restricted, as they sensibly were until the most recent past, by what titles have inventory in front of customers on store …

3 Strategies for Marketing A Book Series

I’m a cliffhanger reader by heart. I love to be left wondering what’s coming next, and yearning for the next part of the story. It’s an illness of sorts, I suppose. So when I wrote my first book, I wanted to write a series—a set of books that drops my readers off a cliff and pulls them to the next book. Cliffhangers are not a nasty marketing technique. They’re simply …

Kindle Android app gets all-text bold: Here’s what it looks like

Kindle Android app gets all-text bold: Here’s what it looks like | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
I was grumpily reading a biography of Nora Ephron, the late writer-director. She Made Me Laugh was good. The view on my Pixel XL phone was not. As usual with Kindle books, I struggled with rotten contrast between the words and the background, at least as perceived by me---an issue common to many of a certain age.…

Infographic: Ten Signs You Are Reading a Gothic Novel | The Digital Reader

Infographic: Ten Signs You Are Reading a Gothic Novel | The Digital Reader | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
When I first found this infographic, I thought it aid "10 signs you're living in a gothic novel". That would have ben nifty, but no. As an established genre, gothic novels follow certain tropes, so much so that Adam Frost and Zhenia Vasiliev were able to create an infographic for The Guardian that lists ten obvious signs of the gothic novel. When Horace Walpole published his ‘gothic story’ The Castle of Otranto, he launched a literary movement which has sired monsters, unleashed lightning and put damsels in distress for 250 years. A horde of sub-genres has followed, from southern gothic to gothic SF, but are some novels more gothic than others? Two of the better-known traits include a murderous villain with scary eyes, and being set in a gothic building. (Gothic novels may only have an accidental connection to a certain type of architecture, but that connection is indisputable.) (click to enlarge) eBook Friendly Check These Out!

Reading Classic Novels in an Era of Climate Change

Reading Classic Novels in an Era of Climate Change | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
There is a strange and troubled kind of intimacy between our own moment of climate change and 19th century Britain. It was there that a global, fossil fuel economy first took shape, through its coal-powered factories, railways, and steamships, which drove the emergence of modern consumer capitalism. What might we now find if we look again at the literature of the 19th century? Although Victorian writers lacked our understanding of a warming planet, we can learn from their deep awareness of the rapid and far-reaching ways that their society was changing. In their hands, the novel became a powerful tool for thinking about the interconnections between individuals, society, economics, and the natural world. North and South One place to start thinking about such things might be Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South (1855), a classic example of the “industrial novel” genre that flourished in the middle decades of that century. Most of the novel’s events take place in the industrial town of Milton-Northern (Manchester), the epicenter of Victorian coal-fired industrial production. Our protagonist, Margaret Hale, is forced to relocate there due to family circumstances, and her first numb impressions are that the environment, the economy, and the city’s urban geography have [...]
