IBM standardizing on EPUB to reduce digital barriers and increase mobile support

IBM standardizing on EPUB to reduce digital barriers and increase mobile support | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it

SEATTLE, WA: International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF) and IBM  today announced a collaboration to develop a white paper highlighting lessons learned from IBM’s recent decision to support EPUB as the company’s primary packaged portable document format.

EPUB is the widely adopted open standard format, for digital publications, developed by IDPF, based on HTML5 and other technologies from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), as well as technologies from IDPF. IDPF is a trade and standards association with over 300 members in over 45 countries.  Increased client demand for mobile solutions, accessibility through the cloud, and the transformational opportunities both pose for enterprise content are the key drivers for IBM’s move to the next-generation portable document format. By standardizing on EPUB, IBM is also extending its leadership in accessibility and delivering a richer user experience and engagement.

Nook App to Come Pre-Installed on E-Fun Tablets, with Free Magazine Issues | The Digital Reader

Nook App to Come Pre-Installed on E-Fun Tablets, with Free Magazine Issues | The Digital Reader | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
Back before 2013, when Amazon was still contesting the ebook market with Nook, Kobo, and Google, it was common for device makers to announce they were shipping their Android tablet or smartphone with one or more of the aforementioned ebook apps (Play Books came as a default because Google's bloatware came entangled with Android OS license). This practice fell by the wayside after Nook imploded and Kobo gave up on the US market, but now it looks like we're seeing a revival. E-Fun announced this week that newly purchased Nextbook tablets now come with the Nook app, and that anyone who logs into the app will get free content from B&N. From Android Guys: Consumer mobile electronics designer, E FUN announced this week it has partnered up with Barnes&Nobles in order to provide owners of the Nextbook Ares 8A, Ares 10A and Ares 11A with free reading materials. Users will have to access the pre-installed NOOK Reading app on their device and set up a NOOK account in order to start reading publications such as WeightWatchers, Men’s Health, Shape, Reader’s Digest, Rachel Ray every day and Better Homes & Gardens. The offer expires on September 30, so if you too are holding on to one of these tablets you [...]

The Challenges facing Print Media: Is Copyright Reform part of the Answer? | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
This year Canada is required to review and potentially update its copyright legislation. The passage of the Copyright Modernization Bill in 2012 included a statutory five year review.
