African-Amercan literature sold predominantly by indie authors

African-Amercan literature sold predominantly by indie authors | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
There's a genre under "general fiction" that defies the traditional data, according to Data Guy at Digital Book World. Twenty-eight percent of General Fiction is published by indie/self-published authors, but Data Guy decided to break the data down even further. Turns out that African-American fiction, which lacks a separate Nielsen category, is sold predominantly by…

Nielsen Sells Off Its US Book Market Stats Division to NPD | The Digital Reader

Nielsen's trouble-prone US book services unit has been acquired by a competitor, the American data and market insights company NPD. From The Bookseller: US-based BookScan, Pubtrack Digital, PubTrack Higher Education, PubTrack Christian, Books & Consumers, PubEasy and PubNet have all been acquired by NPD, and will become part of a new entity, NPD Book. The news will raise publisher concern about access to global book sales data at a time when the industry remains in transition. Nielsen will continue to own and operate Nielsen Book outside of the US in nine countries as well as in any international expansion markets. Jonathan Stolper, global managing director of Nielsen Book, will become president of NPD Book. All of the US-based commercial Nielsen Book employees have been offered the opportunity to join the NPD Book team. Nielsen is to continue to provide full operational support for the newly branded US book services during a transition period. Andrew Breedt, currently director of Nielsen Book Research, has become co-m.d of the International arm of Nielsen Book, along with Stephen Long. So Nielsen is parting with a market stats division in the single biggest book market in the world. What does that say about the market, [...]

Canadian Regulators Reach Deal With Apple, Publishers on eBook Pricing Controls | The Digital Reader

Canadian Regulators Reach Deal With Apple, Publishers on eBook Pricing Controls | The Digital Reader | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
There is much gnashing of teeth today in Toronto as the Canadian Competition Bureau defeats kobo's year-long effort to avoid competing with Amazon. Canada's business competition watchdog said on Friday it had reached an agreement with Apple and three major ebook publishers that will allow retailers to offer discounts to customers. The Competition Bureau's investigation found that an arrangement between the publishers and Apple led to higher prices for Canadians. The watchdog said it had entered into consent agreements with Apple, Hachette, Macmillan and Simon & Schuster that will let other retailers, including Amazon and Kobo, give discounts on ebooks by those publishers. The Competition Bureau, however, was unable to reach an agreement with a fourth publisher involved, HarperCollins, and filed an application to order it to halt its alleged anti-competitive practices. The U.S. Supreme Court last year declined to hear Apple's challenge to a court decision that it conspired with five publishers to increase ebook prices. O O O Both Kobo and Amazon were queried for comment; the latter has not responded, but Kobo released the following statement. "We will review the decision that has been made, and will work with publishers as their terms change," said Michael Tamblyn, [...]

Canada's Agency eBook Pricing Settlement Will Have Little Impact on eBook Prices | The Digital Reader

Yesterday's news about Apple and three major trade publishers agreeing to give up agency price controls in Canada has been misreported in some circles, with one person going so far as to claim both that Canada had "passed a new law to lower ebook prices" and that "the Canadian Competition Bureau has commanded that Hachette, Macmillan and Simon & Schuster have to lower ebook prices". What with all the misinformation flying around, it's worth a few minutes of our time to read the actual settlement agreements and consider their impact on the market. Since this post is in many ways an addendum to yesterday's story, I will not repeat the background but instead focus on the specific terms and conditions. The text of the agreements have been released, and you can find them at the links below. Consent agreement with Apple Consent agreement with Hachette Consent agreement with MacMillan Consent agreement with Simon & Schuster The four decrees are essentially the same and differ only in minor details. They require Apple and the three publishers to make specific changes to each company's ebook distribution contracts. Apple has to drop the most-favored-nation clause from its contracts with publishers, and it cannot add that [...]

Google Play Books is Renting Harlequin Titles for $.99 a Day | The Digital Reader

Google Play Books is Renting Harlequin Titles for $.99 a Day | The Digital Reader | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
Early last month Google briefly rented YA titles from HarperCollins for a dollar a day. Now they are running a similar sale on Harlequin titles. The weekly sales email from Google Play Books brought me the news that readers can now rent the works of Lisa Harris, Debbie Macomber, Maya Banks, and others. We're heating up your winter with red-hot Harlequin romance! Enjoy a special 99¢ rentals offer on great reads now through February 2nd. The rental period begins at the time of purchase, and can be accessed in your library for the next 24-hours. Explore contemporary crushes, westerns, and suspenseful love stories, and fall for your next favorite. Over twice as many titles are included in this sale as in the sale back in December, and given the voracious reading habits of the average romance fan that could prove a costly mistake for Harlequin. Judging based on the reader I share a Kindle account with, romance readers can easily go through three or four titles a day. This sale lasts for two weeks, which I am told is enough time to finish 60 ebooks. It will cost less than $60 to rent ebooks which usually sell for $4 to $8 [...]
