Read-Shaming Starts in the Classroom | The Digital Reader

Read-Shaming Starts in the Classroom | The Digital Reader | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
When Ruth Graham proclaimed that adults shouldn't read any books that had been marketed as YA, she became perhaps the best well-known literary snob to issue diktats as to what counted as proper reading material. She is not the only one, however, nor the most damaging. The Bookseller brings us the tale of author Robin Stevens. Stevens is a kid's fiction author who has heard from numerous students who were read-shamed: Stevens told The Bookseller she found the situation "really concerning" in case it discourages children to read at all. She said: "It was an email that a kid of around 14 sent me from New Zealand but I’ve seen it in the UK as well. She was very smart and the teacher said she was too smart and she had to read my books at home. "Sometimes kids in England have said ‘I love your books but teachers have said they are not high level enough for me’. It’s heart-breaking. Reading shouldn’t be like that. Kids should be able to dip in and out of different things in the way adults do – many kids are reading YA or Malory Towers [Hodder Children's Books]. Comfort reading is about returning to books [...]

Amazon's 14th Bookstore to Open in Los Angeles | The Digital Reader

Amazon's 14th Bookstore to Open in Los Angeles | The Digital Reader | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
Those rumors from March were true. News broke on Thursday thatAmazon's fourteenth bookstore will be coming to Los Angeles. Amazon Books, part of Amazon.com Inc., applied for building permits last week for a 5,227-square-foot suite at the Westfield Century City mall, according to a record on the L.A. Department of Building and Safety website. The main project application was submitted May 9 and received initial plan check approval the same day, but a building permit had not yet been issued as of Thursday afternoon, the website says. The application describes Amazon Books as a “first time tenant in Westfield Century City” in suite No. 1970. ... Amazon already has space in other high-end Westfield properties – UTC mall in San Diego and Garden State Plaza in Paramus, N.J. The company didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday about the space in Century City. Other planned and operating Amazon Books locations include pairs of stores in or near Seattle, San Francisco, Manhattan, and Boston, as well as stores in Portland, Chicago, San Diego, and New Jersey, making this Amazon's 14th bookstore. There's no bookstore in the Westfield Century City mall right now. Borders had a store in there but then [...]

Publishers Are Becoming More Like Movie Studios Every Day

Publishers Are Becoming More Like Movie Studios Every Day  | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
It has long been said that the major trade publishers are beginning to act more and more like big Hollywood studios in that the publishers only care about best-seller/blockbuster titles now and not the moderately profitable midlist. I've never been convinced of the truth of the premise, but The Guardian has inadvertently gathered a bunch of examples which show major publishers picking up the book rights to a novel at the same time that studios swoop in to acquire the movie rights. Last week The Guardian published an article about indie authors being snapped up by Hollywood. On first reading, it looks like the writer failed to notice that many of the mentioned titles are published by traditional publishers and that one (Fifty Shades ) has a lot of people in publishing arguing that it had never been self-published in the first place (opinions are divided on this point). Digging into the background of the story, however, revealed a more interesting story. After watching Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill, self-published author Mark Dawson was inspired to create his own answer to the film’s heroine Beatrix “Black Mamba” Kiddo. And now Dawson – and his character government-employed assassin Beatrix Rose – are set to take on Hollywood, with his series on the verge of [...]
