Futureheads | News and views | The Future of the Book

Last week I was fortunate enough to attend my first IxDA event at Futureheads. The subject for the night was ‘The Future of the Book’, and as an English Language grad it’s a topic that lies close to my heart!

The night began with discussion of the four main challenges the paper book has to overcome; Amazon, pricing, diversity andsharing.

Amazon was an interesting one because I’ve been a little on the fence about their role in the book market for quite some time. We talked about their increasing control over book selling and thus the growing control they have in how we consume literature. I thought a really important point was that Amazon are actually positioning themselves in competition with other book sellers, and that’s a divide which hasn’t really been felt at such a scale before.

Six Sites With Truly Free eBooks

Six Sites With Truly Free eBooks  | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
Free ebook sites are so common now that they are not just a dime a dozen, they're a dime a gross. All of the major ebook stores have free ebooks, and you can find even more free (and legal) sites with a simple Google search. But sometimes I need a site that has ebooks worth reading, doesn't have DRM, and doesn't require an account. And that's why I put together this list of I go to when I need reading material and am in a hurry. Feedbooks Feedbooks is by no means the biggest free ebook site and it's not the easiest to navigate, but it comes first in my list because the ebooks are well-formatted and are available in Epub, Kindle, and PDF. It's nice to have that last option because there have been times where I was using a device which did not have a reading app other than Adobe Reader. (Yes, it does happen.) Also, Feedbooks has a mobile site, and that makes it a lot easier to download ebooks to the tablet I want to read them on. Standard eBooks This free ebook site is dedicated to producing the highest quality ebooks, and then giving them [...]

Standard eBooks Pick Up Where Project Gutenberg Leaves Off | The Digital Reader

Standard eBooks Pick Up Where Project Gutenberg Leaves Off | The Digital Reader | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
eBook formatting is important. One of the reasons Feedbooks tops my list of free ebook sites is that the ebooks there are formatted to a higher standard than you can expect from even major publishers. The ebooks are just easier on the eyes, and all other things being equal, great formatting can be the deciding factor in sourcing free ebooks. That is why I was thrilled to learn about the Standard eBooks project. Standard Ebooks is a volunteer-driven project that is picking up where Project Gutenberg, HathiTrust, and the Internet Archive left off. Those projects rescued works from analog obscurity and released them in digital form, while Standard eBooks is out to release that public domain content in a form that is pleasant to use. From the blurb: The Standard Ebooks project is a volunteer driven, not-for-profit effort to produce a collection of high quality, carefully formatted, accessible, open source, and free public domain ebooks that meet or exceed the quality of commercially produced ebooks. The text and cover art in our ebooks is already believed to be in the public domain, and Standard Ebook dedicates its own work to the public domain, thus releasing whole ebooks files themselves into the public domain. I wonder [...]

W3C to Hold eBook Publishing Summit in November | The Digital Reader

W3C to Hold eBook Publishing Summit in November | The Digital Reader | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
After having officially subsumed the IDPF earlier this year, the W3C  (World Wide Web Consortium) has announced its first ebook publishing summit: W3C opened today registration for its first ever W3C Publishing Summit to be held 9-10 November 2017 in San Francisco, California, co-located with the W3C’s Technical Plenary and Advisory Committee meetings (TPAC 2017), and calls for speakers by 15 July 2017. The inaugural W3C Publishing Summit will show how publishers are using today’s Web technologies to make publications more effective and workflows more efficient. ... Read the Media Advisory and ?Blog post to learn about the event and major milestones for Publishing at W3C. Insiders are highly optimistic that this new working group will mean they get to keep their jobs, but outsiders have questioned whether this group can accomplish anything significant or just bring us new examples of ebook tech we already have which the market doesn't want. The merger was not universally popular; in fact, there was a last-ditch campaign to block the merger, but it was unsuccessful. But the merger hs gone forward, and development of the second most important ebook standard will continue apace. image by medithIT   Check These Out!

Guest Post: As Harry Potter Turns Twenty, Let’s Focus on Reading Pleasure Rather Than Literary Merit | The Digital Reader

Guest Post: As Harry Potter Turns Twenty, Let’s Focus on Reading Pleasure Rather Than Literary Merit | The Digital Reader | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
It’s 20 years on June 26 since the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the first in the seven-book series. The Philosopher’s Stone has sold more than 450 million copies and been translated into 79 languages; the series has inspired a movie franchise, a dedicated fan website, and spinoff stories. I recall the long periods of frustration and excited anticipation as my son and I waited for each new installment of the series. This experience of waiting is one we share with other fans who read it progressively across the ten years between the publication of the first and last Potter novel. It is not an experience contemporary readers can recreate. The Harry Potter series has been celebrated for encouraging children to read, condemned as a commercial rather than a literary success and had its status as literature challenged. Rowling’s writing was described as “basic”, “awkward”, “clumsy” and “flat”. A Guardian article in 2007, just prior to the release of the final book in the series, was particularly scathing, calling her style “toxic”. My own focus is on the pleasure of reading. I’m more interested in the enjoyment children experience reading Harry Potter, including the appeal of the [...]
