E. It’s Complicated. How Two Schools are Riding the Transition to Ebooks - The Digital Shift

E. It’s Complicated. How Two Schools are Riding the Transition to Ebooks - The Digital Shift | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
Marianela Camacho Alfaro's insight:
In a 2013 survey, 26 percent of School Library Journal subscribers said they currently usedigital textbooks and ebooks, and 11 percent plan to use them. These statistics mirror national trends. Twenty-three percent of Americans over the age of 15 read ebooks, up from 16 percent the previous year, according to a Pew Research Center Internet & American Life Project survey from December 2012.

For this close-up report on going digital, SLJ talked to academic experts and visited librarians, teachers, and students at two high-performing Illinois high schools: New Trier Township High School in Winnetka and Northfield, and Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire. Both schools serve upper-middle-class Chicago suburbs.

We asked the big questions on everyone’s mind. What type of device do schools prefer? Which are the best ebook providers? How many student iPads get damaged per year? Do students read more in ebook or print format?

Implementing Patron-Driven Acquisition (PDA) for Ebook Acquisition that Fits Your Library - E-LIS repository

Implementing Patron-Driven Acquisition (PDA) for Ebook Acquisition that Fits Your Library - E-LIS repository | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it

Patron-Driven Acquisition (PDA) (also called Demand-Driven Acquisition, DDA)has been commonly used in academic libraries for acquiring ebooks. PDA is still relatively new; libraries have adopted it without an established guideline for best practices. The implementation of the e-book PDA model varies from library to library, so that this poster offers a systematic comparison approach to evaluate different scenarios based on ebook PDA acquisition and usage during 1/1/2012 – 5/31/2014. This work try to help libraries gain a better understanding of how PDA works under different scenarios, and choose the scenario that works best to fulfill their needs. Florida College Opens A Library Without Books

Florida College Opens A Library Without Books | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it

A fully digital library is among the futuristic features of Florida Polytechnic University's striking dome-shaped building, designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.

"It's a boldly relevant decision to go forward without books," said Kathryn Miller, the university's director of libraries.

The inaugural class of 550 students, offered scholarships covering tuition to attend a public university so new it's not yet accredited, can access more than 135,000 ebooks on their choice of reader, tablet or laptop.

A bookless library is a rarity among U.S. colleges but reflects the high-tech ambitions of the university in Lakeland, Florida. Rising along a drab stretch of highway between Tampa and Orlando, Florida Polytechnic envisions building a technology corridor in the image of Silicon Valley.
