The Only Place People Shop Online Is Amazon

The Only Place People Shop Online Is Amazon | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
Online shopping in general isn't killing the great American mall, Amazon.com is — singlehandedly so.
Marianela Camacho Alfaro's insight:

Online shopping in general isn't killing the great American mall, Amazon.com is — singlehandedly so. The Internet retailer sells more stuff online than its 12 biggest competitors combined, all of which move an incredibly tiny amount of stuff through their online storefronts, according to new documents from the Securities and Exchange Commission obtained by The Wall Street Journal's Shelly Banji and Paul Ziobro. Companies like Target, Wal-Mart, and PetSmart have all reported huge growth rates in their online sales, but only because their businesses are growing from very small figures.

True or false: If it's on your phone, and you paid for it, you own it | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
When you purchase a book from a bookstore your rights to that particular stack of paper are pretty intuitive. It becomes your personal property, not much different from a t-shirt, a diamond ring, or anything else you might carry around. You can sell your book, lend it to a friend, or toss it in the fireplace. In short

Why Publishers Must Go Mobile

Why Publishers Must Go Mobile | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
The debate about the true size of the self-published market continues. Traditional publishers and advocates for independent works have each tried to position the market as more or less tilting their way. To date, we’ve not seen much of a discussion about why knowing the size of the book market matters.

Here’s one reason it matters: mobile content discovery and consumption.

Should Educational Publishers Be Disruptors?

Should Educational Publishers Be Disruptors? | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
Call me old-fashioned, but I’ve never warmed to the idea that disruption is a good thing in business. I’m not a fan of companies that set out to disrupt the industries in which they operate (take that, Jeff Bezos and Elizabeth Holmes) and I am particularly skeptical about those that set out to disrupt education, …

AAP: eBook Sales, Publisher Revenues Down in First Third of 2016

AAP: eBook Sales, Publisher Revenues Down in First Third of 2016  | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
Is anyone in the mood for poetic justice? Then you'll be pleased with the latest announcement from the AAP. On Thursday the Association of American Publishers released its latest Statshot report on revenues of the US book publishing industry. Trade book sales for the 1,200 odd publishers who submit their data to the AAP were up 3.4% for the month of April, but still down 4.5% for the year. Paperback and audiobook revenues increased the most in April 2016 (21.5% and 20.4%), respectively) while sales of hardback books were up 2.6%. eBook revenues were down 22% for the month of April. For the first four months of the year, ebook and hardback revenues were down (21.7% and 5.2%), while paperback revenues were up 9.9% and audiobook sales were up 31.4%.   In other words, the Big Five are having some success in shifting ebook buyers back to print, but they are still being stymied by Amazon's decision to drive down the price of hardback books last summer. Amazon is still keeping prices down, and that is depressing the market. That is a win for both consumers and for pundits who want to gloat at publishers shooting themselves in the foot.  O O O Press [...]

What's Happened to Transmedia?

It's been haunting me ever since. "

"The genie is out of the bottle and can never be returned" Good stuff from Andrea.
Dr. Pamela Rutledge's curator insight, September 29, 12:32 PM

Transmedia has always had a rocky definition. It may, however, be moving more from a definable thing to a perspective on how to approach communication--whether entertainment, marketing or education.  To me, it has always represented a more accurate user-centered design that reflects how the human brain receives and gathers information and makes meaning of experience--through multiple channels.  It's not surprising that the pioneers of transmedia experiences have moved to the edge of the storytelling envelope, such as VR.  It is where the attention and money are focused given that the opportunities are unknown and thus, full of promise.  As Andrea's article points out, transmedia strategies were not uniformly able to create a viable business model that supported many creative endeavors.  At the same time, the fundamental shifts in the media landscape that impact consumer expectations and demands, not to mention the flood of choice, suggest that awareness of the need for multi-platform engagement only grows.  To me, this suggests that the fundamentals are more important, even if they "only" provide a foundation for thinking about strategies and projects in the way Simon describes.
