So much for the myth of distracting digital devices: Distraction may actually help creativity

So much for the myth of distracting digital devices: Distraction may actually help creativity | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
Anti-ebook device-hating Luddites are probably not going to like to hear this, but a new piece of research suggests that the kind of distractions from email, social media, and other extraneous inputs that they rail against may actually boost your creativity. The study, entitled “Creativity and sensory gating indexed by the P50: Selective versus leaky sensory gating in divergent thinkers and creative achievers,” published in Neuropsychologia by the Northwestern University team of Darya L. Zabelina, Daniel O’Leary, Narun Pornpattananangkul, Robin Nusslock, and Mark Beeman, has found evidence that an openness to distraction “may help people integrate ideas that are outside of focus of attention, leading to creativity in the real world.”

The effect of electronic books on enhancing emergent literacy skills of pre-school children

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of e-books on enhancing Jordanian preschool children's emergent literacy skills (experimental group), in comparison to children who were exposed to regular printed books (control group). To achieve the objectives of this study, the total of 92 children were assigned to either experimental group (n = 48) and control group (n = 44). The pre- and post-test data was collected on print awareness, vocabulary, alphabetic knowledge and phonological awareness skills to determine the effectiveness of e-books. The results indicated that children in experimental group performed significantly better than the children in control group. Moreover, significant differences were found according to gender, as the female children exhibited superior emergent literacy skills to the male children. Regarding the different emergent literacy skills, children in the experimental group achieved better improvement in the areas of print awareness and vocabulary. Based on these findings, it is recommended that pre-school institutions incorporate e-books activities into their classrooms.

What happens when platforms turn into publishers?

What happens when platforms turn into publishers? | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
If you’re a publisher, Facebook holds a lot of power. The social media giant is already responsible for directing up to 40 percent of some sites’ traffic, and 75 percent of BuzzFeed’s. Now, according to a report in The New York Times on Tuesday, Facebook is negotiating with a number of publishers to be more than a funnel that directs users to content on news sites. Instead, the story says, the company will partner with media companies (the Times, National Geographic and BuzzFeed are rumored) to host entire stories and journalism internally, “a leap of faith for news organizations accustomed to keeping their readers within their own ecosystems,” the Times writes.
