Debating the Digital Textbook Issue---Again -

Debating the Digital Textbook Issue---Again - | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
digital textbook
Marianela Camacho Alfaro's insight:

Thanks to Nate at The Digital Reader for sending my way two stories in as many days about the digital textbook issue. In the first, he outlines some reasons behind the ‘growing resistance’ to digital textbooks, including poor navigation features, inadequate study extras and internet requirements which limit student use. In the second, he profiles a North Carolina school district whose difficulty with the actual devices pre-empted any further use, textbook or otherwise.

Tablets vs. Textbooks - ProCon.org | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
Should tablets replace textbooks in K-12 schools? (RT @procon_org: K-12 textbook publishing is an $8 billion industry; 3 companies run about 85% of the market.
Marianela Camacho Alfaro's insight:
"Proponents of tablets say that they are supported by most teachers and students, are much lighter than print textbooks, and improve standardized test scores. Increased Piracy Among College Students Means A Shrinking Market for Digital Textbooks

Increased Piracy Among College Students Means A Shrinking Market for Digital Textbooks | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
Marianela Camacho Alfaro's insight:

The Book Industry Study Group (BISG) has a new report out this week on the buying, non-buying, and reading habits of US college students. I only have the press release, and not the full report (it costs $$$$), but if the report matches the dribblets of info in the press release then I would be trying to exit the college textbook market right now.

According to the BISG, piracy (including photocopying of textbooks) is up among college students. A larger percentage of the survey group reported downloading pirated course content from an unauthorized Web site than in previous surveys. 34% of respondents indicated that they’d done this, from 20 percent when this was first measured in 2010. And just to make things even more interesting, the percentage of students saying they photocopied or scanned chapters of textbooks belonging to other students rose to 31% in this survey (from 21% in 2010).

Simons: A textbook case of digital revolution: Alberta closes the book on an education tradition

No more pencils. No more books. No more teachers’ dirty looks.
Marianela Camacho Alfaro's insight:
"The Internet is an extraordinarily powerful educational tool. Of course, we want our kids to have access to the best, evolving, information, the most effective new pedagogical resources. Of course, we want them to be fluent in the language of our brave new multimedia world. But in our rush to embrace the very real virtues of the digital universe, let us be careful that our enchantment doesn’t blind us to its limitations. We may no longer need a textbook warehouse. Let’s not be in quite such a hurry to get rid of the textbook itself."
