Quill & Quire » Guest opinion: why libraries should get into the book-selling business

Quill & Quire » Guest opinion: why libraries should get into the book-selling business | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
"It may be sacrilegious and antithetical to everything libraries stand for (and as librarians, we appreciate this more than most), but we ardently believe it nevertheless: libraries should get into the business of selling books. Now. The crisis in Canada’s once vibrant book industry is negatively affecting our reading lives and communities. Growing evidence suggests that the increasing dominance of big corporations and discount giants is resulting in less diversity of ideas."

Altering the collections landscape: an overview of patron-driven-acquisitions at Arizona State University Libraries | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
Marianela Camacho Alfaro's insight:

"In 2009, Arizona State University Libraries adopted a patron-driven acquisitions (PDA) plan for both electronic and print books. This article describes the decision making process that resulted in a permanent change in collection development at a major academic research library. It considers how the program works from the perspective of library subject specialists and provides some information on the user experience. Finally, the article discusses future directions for PDA and poses questions that must be considered in the context of a major paradigm shift in collection development practices."

No Surprise: Student-Age Digital Natives Still Like Libraries, Print : Publishing Perspectives

No Surprise: Student-Age Digital Natives Still Like Libraries, Print : Publishing Perspectives | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
A new Pew report takes a look at how 16-29 year olds view print books and libraries — and, no surprise, finds a favorable response. After all, this group does include a lot of students.
Marianela Camacho Alfaro's insight:

"According to a new report from the Pew Research Center, even though Americans between the ages of 16-29 are heavy users of technology, they are more likely than their older counterparts to both use and appreciate libraries as physical spaces.

Perhaps surprisingly, a majority of those polled under the age of 30 said that it was “very important” for libraries to have librarians and books available for borrowing, and few thought that libraries should fully automate or move their services online."

The management of e-book collections and their implication on the economic management of the library

Marianela Camacho Alfaro's insight:

Purpose – The addition of digital formats such as specialised magazines and e-books to libraries has led to a dramatic change in management format with respect to those involved in the reading process: users, publishers, distributors, booksellers, and authors; and in turn, the way in which libraries are planned and managed. This article aims to focus on these issues.

OverDrive Added a Record 8,000 New Partner Libraries in the Past Year

Marianela Camacho Alfaro's insight:

OverDrive is getting ready to exhibit at Frankfurt Book Fair later this week, and today they put out a press release tooting their own horn. While I would normally be inclined to ignore their press release, after I researched the figures I realized that there were indeed a few newsworthy details.

OD now boasts 27,000 partner library and schools in 36 countries around the world, and it was around this time last year that OD claimed 19,000 partners. In other words OverDrive has added 8,000 new partners in the past year.

Just to put that into perspective, OverDrive’s 3 main competitors (3M Cloud Library, Axis360, and MyiLibrary) have, between the 3 of them, fewer than 8,000 partner libraries. This means that in the past year OD has added more new partners than all 3 of its competitors combined.
