Amazon and Its Friends | The New York Times, Bits

Amazon and Its Friends | The New York Times, Bits | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
Forget about same-day delivery of diapers or reconnecting with your high school girlfriend or publishing those novels without the aid of an editor or bookstore. The greatest achievement of Silicon Valley has been the marketing of Silicon Valley. Google, Apple, Facebook — they all assert they exist for your benefit, their only goal to amuse and enlighten and help you. To be, in short, your best buddy.

The tech world’s devotion to its customers was put to a vote this month in Manhattan, at one of the Intelligence Squared series of debates. The evening’s topic: “Amazon is the reader’s friend.”

U.S. fantasy author Michael La Ronn offers top tips on how to find beta readers to help you improve the quality of your self-published books

So you've written a book. Now what? Many authors use "beta" readers. That is, a person who will read your book draft and give you constructive criticism.

The writer, Michael La Ronn, shares some thought-provoking suggestions on how to find your perfect beta reader through Goodreads.com. Goodreads was just purchased by Amazon, so it could be the perfect match for author and reader.

Apparently, YA, epic fantasy, romance, and sci-fi authors may have an easier time finding their readers. Persistence is the key, according to La Ronn, and he gives several great tips on searching for and cultivating the author/beta reader relationship.

Kindle surprise and disappointment

Kindle surprise and disappointment | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
Stephen Curry: the pleasure and pain of ebooks

Via Carlos Pinheiro
Marianela Camacho Alfaro's insight:

"... the pleasant surprise at how painlessly I moved to reading ebooks has been tempered by an annoyance more enduring than sunlit reflections in my glossy screen. I have been repeatedly disappointed at the low quality of the texts that I have bought from Amazon's Kindle store. The frequency of typographical errors, sloppy layout and poor image quality, even on my relatively small sample of around twenty titles, has made me wonder if the 'e' in ebook stands for easy money. This seems strange given the care publishers normally take over printed versions — I have only very rarely come across typos or pagination errors — but the evidence from my online purchases is mounting. "

If the Kindle fails so will ebooks

I don’t get why anti-Amazon people get up in arms whenever they find an author who links to the Amazon pages for their books. Or whenever a publisher out there seems to favour the Seattle Beh...
Marianela Camacho Alfaro's insight:

"Even if every publisher, every author, and every editor out there studiously avoided sending traffic to Amazon in any way, that wouldn’t even cause a measurable dent in Amazon’s book or ebook revenue.

People go to Amazon, they aren’t sent there.

Pointing people anywhere else will only result in lower affiliate fees for the author or publisher as people follow the link, close the tab, and then go to Amazon directly to buy it there anyway."

How Steve Jobs Got Apple Into Trouble Over Ebooks

How Steve Jobs Got Apple Into Trouble Over Ebooks | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
So Apple and a group of major publishers stand accused of ebook price fixing. But before we have them drawn and quartered, let's consider the facts. First of all, Apple never tr...
Marianela Camacho Alfaro's insight:

"Apple never tried to hide what it was doing with ebooks. Steve Jobs wanted his new iPad and iBooks platform to compete in the exploding ereader market.

As ever, Jobs wanted to do so on his own terms. So he told publishers how it was going to be.

Publishers agreed to his "Agency Model" (publishers set the price, Apple gets 30% of the profits, and publishers cannot allow lower prices on a competing service). The fortunes of Apple, publishers, authors and even Amazon, improved as a result."

Price times units sold

Marianela Camacho Alfaro's insight:

"Publishers have defended agency pricing as a way to ensure that healthy competition is maintained among ebook retailers. If all outlets offer a book on equal terms (went the argument), the price incentive disappears and stores compete on service. This is one of the reasons many European markets maintain fixed-book-price laws.

Arguing that the largest retailer should offer discounts that few or no other retailers can match potentially hastens the loss of smaller, independent stores. If you believe that support in niche markets comes largely from these kinds of retail outlets, weakening them is a bad move."

Amazon patents 'DVD extras' for ebooks (Wired UK)

Amazon patents 'DVD extras' for ebooks (Wired UK) | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
Amazon has been awarded a patent describing a way to enhance your electronic reading experience with more personalised content -- not just from publishers, but from your friends as well
Marianela Camacho Alfaro's insight:

"The online retailer was granted a patent on 2 July outlining a "Customised Electronic Book with Supplemental Content" ( Patent #8478662). It describes a way to enhance Kindle ebooks by tacking on supplemental material provided by publishers or reputable sources. The ebooks would be personalised by adding additional content within the specific interests of individual readers, or reader types. So, you could be reading A Game of Thrones and an additional story line or illustration (for example, a map) could be accessed from within the book, sort of like a DVD extra."

Can people find your book? If your title and description doesn't contain keywords that people are searching for, then your book may not sell.

Keywords play an important role in the discoverability of your book. If you are self-published, and have control of your Amazon bookshelf, then go there right now and check your 7 allowed keywords. You can also use important keywords in your title and your description of your book.

For my book: "Put the Pause in Your Menopause - A Sensible, No-Nonsense Approach to Relieving Your Symptoms," http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AYA199W I use the following keywords: Menopause, Hormone diet, Flat belly, Jillian Michaels, Body Revolution, Weight loss, Exercise. The reason I use "Jillian Michaels" in the keywords is that I used her exercise program to lose weight, and in turn, it also helped my symptoms which I detail in this book.

I did a little experiment and switched the order of a couple of keywords on the bookshelf, so I'll be watching to see if that moves my book up in the Amazon titles.

How Amazon Became the King of Audiobooks

How Amazon Became the King of Audiobooks | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
Recorded books are now a billion-dollar business, which Amazon dominates perhaps like none other.
Marianela Camacho Alfaro's insight:

"If you are a fan of audiobooks -- and the numbers of people who say they are has grown impressively in recent years -- the odds are that Amazon is your preferred place to shop. Of all the ways Amazon has come to dominate the book market, especially in the digital arena, its share of audiobook sales probably represents its most formidable pre-eminence.

At the last tally (now more than a year old), more than 60 percent of audiobooks were downloaded to digital devices, and nearly all of those came from Audible (an Amazon company) or through its long-standing license to supply audiobooks to Apple's iTunes. Amazon also owns Brilliance audio, the biggest producer of CD-based audiobooks. Audiobooks are now well over a billion-dollar business, and the available figures suggest that Amazon retains a far larger piece of that revenue than any other retailer."

Loss Leaders, Predatory Pricing, and Why Amazon Isn’t the Defendant Today

Marianela Camacho Alfaro's insight:

"But there is one question that seems to still be circulating today. A lot of people, including one in my contemn section, wonder why Amazon was not on trial today. After all, Amazon’s pricing policy is clear evidence (in some minds, at least) of their nefarious plans to destroy their competition.

Today I thought I would take some time and point out the difference between what Amazon’s actual pricing policies and what many assume to be those policies."

Monopoly achieved: An invincible Amazon begins raising prices | MobyLives

Monopoly achieved: An invincible Amazon begins raising prices | MobyLives | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
Marianela Camacho Alfaro's insight:

"Amazon‘s fifteen year campaign to control the book market—a campaign that has included not paying taxes, pulling buy buttons of accounts that won’t agree to terms, coaching the government to sue its opponents for antitrust violations, and loss-leader pricing so drastic it’s questionable the company has ever made a profit—seems to have finally achieved the monopoly it sought. It’s now doing what successful monopolies have, historically, always done upon taking over a marketplace: raising prices."

Revisionist History – Salon & Amazon’s Evil eBook Motives

Revisionist History – Salon & Amazon’s Evil eBook Motives | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
"Yeah, that doesn’t work. When you focus on a single ebook that is deeply discounted you are simultaneously ignoring all the ebooks that aren’t being discounted. It’s simply not possible to model a complex system with millions of variables by using a single data point. To do so would be to oversimplify the complexities of the ebook market as a system to the point that the argument has no relevance."
