Food, clean air and fresh water ― these are just a few of the life-sustaining benefits that are derived from “Satoyama” landscapes. Traditionally Satoyama referred to rural landscapes in Japan, but this term is now used more broadly to refer to socio-ecological production landscapes, multi-use landscapes that include forest, agricultural lands, and more. Similar production landscapes have sustained millions of people around the globe for thousands of years, but these Satoyama increasingly face threats such as population growth and industrialization.
