Mon avis : l'évaluation est au centre de la question des MOOCs, et de la validité de leur modèle économique

Vincent Datin's comment, April 6, 2013 4:43 AM

California's multi-million dollar online education flop is another blow for MOOCs

California's multi-million dollar online education flop is another blow for MOOCs | Easy MOOC | Scoop.it

“Reinvent.” That was the giddy catchword of a plan by the University of California to create an all-digital “campus” that would revolutionize higher education by providing courses online for students shut out of the system’s brick-and-mortar classrooms at a time of high demand but falling budgets. Three years later ...

What Harvard Business School Has Learned About Online Collaboration From HBX

What Harvard Business School Has Learned About Online Collaboration From HBX | Easy MOOC | Scoop.it

In June 2014, Harvard Business School launched HBX, its new online education initiative. At the time, the norm, increasingly, in many online courses was to create a “lean back”, individualized experience where students would primarily watch streamed video lectures that centered on experts. Stimulating lectures with star professors, perhaps, but lectures nonetheless — with a passive, individualized learner experience. We wanted to change that...

I can't argue more. MOOCs shall be designed short and competency-based instead of a mere copy-paste of university lectures. But MOOCs already put a ding to the universe towards the revolution of higher education.

From MOOCs To Minerva: Higher Education And Beyond

From MOOCs To Minerva: Higher Education And Beyond | Easy MOOC | Scoop.it

While futurists try to work out the kinks, it is still apparent that MOOCs cannot provide the level of education students receive by physically attending a lecture and interacting with their instructor. The class sizes of MOOCs make it nearly impossible for professors to grade assignments and address the queries of their pupils, if the professors are interacting at all and not just putting a signature to an agreement to have videos of their lectures used .

MOOCs and Credentialing: A Revolutionary Perspective

MOOCs and Credentialing: A Revolutionary Perspective | Easy MOOC | Scoop.it

...A number of parallels exist between the new frontier of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and their recognition as “academic currency” and the fate of the doomed Continental. Just as the revolutionary banknotes lacked credibility, the assessment instruments used by students to prove knowledge and mastery of MOOCs continue to face an uphill battle for authenticity. Until these issues are overcome, online education will be, in the eyes of many, “not be worth a Continental”...

Excellent article ! The analogy to the Continental currency during the american revolution is well done.

Universities have still the monopoly on the accreditations. Therefore, the badges of online courses cannot replace universities diplomas yet. But, ultimately, the companies decide if the skills learnt online are worth considering. For example, what is the more valuable asset for me as a software engineer: my second-rated french engineer diploma or an Udacity nano-degree vetted by Google and AT&T ? I wonder...

IMO, MOOC certificates are good enough to add a second competency above a university diploma.
