Phonics is one of the primary building blocks of reading. Without an understanding of the relationship between letters and sounds, reading cannot occur.
Marie Kilgallon's insight:

Simply put, phonics is the connection between graphemes (letter symbols) and sounds. Because we have been readers for a good portion of our lives this relationship seems apparent and common sense.

LIBRARIES in South Africa are to be soon filled with literacy from Swadlincote high school.

On arrival in South Africa The Rotary Club of Kirstenbosch uses its database of about 60 primary and secondary schools to decide who should receive some of the donated books based on their need.

The system from which current English spelling conventions have developed was the one used by the poet Geoffrey Chaucer, who died in 1400.
