"You're already a walking sensor platform," Hunt said, referring to all of the information captured by smartphones. "You are aware of the fact that somebody can know where you are at all times because you carry a mobile device, even if that mobile device is turned off. You know this, I hope? Yes? Well, you should."

 

In fact Hunt noted that based on the sensors in a smartphone, someone can be identified (with 100 percent accuracy) by the way they walk — implying that someone could be identified even when carrying someone else's phone.

The challenge for the CIA is to find the relevance is the ocean of information when something happens. The first step is for "data scientists" to save and analyze all digital breadcrumbs — even the ones people don't know they are creating (i.e. "More is always better").

 

"Since you can't connect dots you don't have, it drives us into a mode of, we fundamentally try to collect everything and hang on to it forever," Hunt said. "It is really very nearly within our grasp to be able to compute on all human generated information." 

 

He ends with comments about how the "inanimate is becoming sentient," how cognitive machines (e.g. Watson) are going to "explode upon us," and how technology is moving faster than governments, legal systems, and even individuals can keep up.

When investigating social/relational data, it is usually not the forest that is useful, but the clusters of various trees, and their relationships, inside the ecosystem. We not only want to "see the forest for the trees", but also see the patterns/clusters of trees in the forest! 

Unless the bar has been set too low, for what a link is, most collections of big data on social relationships contain hundreds, if not thousands, of components/subsets.  Patterns reveal much within interlinked data. As we zoom in, we can begin to answer some useful questions...

Who is here?  How are they clustered? How are they connected? Who are the key connectors?  Who is in the thick of things?

Below are various subsets of the above ecosystem -- we put an MRI to our big data pile.  These network maps show various slices of the whole, and how they are connected. We now see patterns worth investigating.

In this section, I shall give an overview of literature spread across various disciplines but having a focus on either Agent‐based Modeling or Complex Network‐based methods.

Social sciencesABM

Agent‐based modeling has found extensive usage in social sciences. Epstein and Axtell present a social sciences model for a society called Sugarscape (Epstein and Axtell 1996) as can be seen in Figure 2d. Bonabeau has noted ABM as an effective set of methods and techniques for simulating human systems (Bonabeau 2002). Kohler notes a clear focus on ABM in anthropology and sociology but does not note its significance in comparison with differential equation models (Kohler2000). This work also notes skepticism towards simulation in general and ABM in particular. However, we may note that recent advances in validation and verification of models (Niazi et al.2009) are focused on alleviating these problems such as discussed in (Miller and Page 2007).

Likewise Macy and Willer (Macy and Willer 2002) note that while sociologists often model processes in social sciences as interactions of mathematical variables, they have discovered ABM to be an alternate approach to modeling social life as interactions among influential and responsive agents. Gimblett demonstrates the integration of ABM with Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and its application on social and ecological data (Gimblett 2002). Axelrod gives an overview of simulation in the social sciences (Axelrod and Tesfatsion 2006). More recent work includes (Gilbert and Troitzsch 2005). Davidson gives a Computer Sciences perspective to ABM (Davidsson 2002). Other recent work includes ABM for human socio‐cultural behavior by Jiang et al. in (Jiang et al.2012). A recent special issue on complex social systems was edited by Lopez et al. (López‐Paredes et al. 2012). Another source of valuable information in the application of ABM is the journal JASSS. Tesfatsion has given an overview of developing agent‐based models of computational economics in (Tesfatsion 2002, 2003; Tesfatsion and Judd 2006). Whereas Luna and Stefansson give an overview of using Swarm as platform for economic simulations in (Luna and Stefansson 2000). Modeling of driver route behavior in transportation research is given by Dia in (Dia 2002). A tutorial on using ABM in social sciences has been presented by North and Macal in (North and Macal 2007).

Publications with a focus on social networks are present in high‐ranking journals such as the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (Lewis et al. 2012). Earlier articles include one by Scott (1988) which argues the importance of the social network model. A relevant special issue in the 90’s gave directions to the field in political sociology, inter‐organizational relations, social support, social influence, and epidemiology (Galaskiewicz and Wasserman 1993). A book and reference on the topic is by Yang and Knoke (2008). Another recent book on the topic is (De Nooy et al. 2011). There are other recent reviews such as the one by McGloin and Kirk in (McGloin and Kirk 2010). Gardy et al. use social network analysis in a tuberculosis network (Gardy et al. 2011). In case of supply chain networks, network analysis has been used by Kim et al. in (Kim et al.2011). Suer et al. demonstrate how the use of networks can improve studies of primate behavior (Sueur et al. 2011).

Apple’s application talks a lot about user annotation--in text and URLs. But let’s look at how Twitter and Facebook treat shared URLs today. They actually pull images from them in a seamless preview, saving users a click into a browser. Map that philosophy onto Apple’s proposal, and suddenly, you can place not just text but images and video in 3-D space across environments. Multimedia merges with the physical world, creating repercussions in communications and advertising that we can only begin to imagine.

Aux côtés de l'ANSSI, la Direction centrale du renseignement intérieur (DCRI) est « le seul service de renseignement de sécurité engagé dans ce domaine », estime son patron, Patrick Calvar, qui assure que « les attaques informatiques constituent à mon sens le danger le plus grave, et il ne fera que croître ». Car selon, lui « la cybercriminalité représente un danger majeur, dans tous les secteurs - criminalité de droit commun, terrorisme, espionnage et intelligence économique. Il n'est pas certain que le vrai bilan ait été fait des dégâts déjà commis, car de nombreuses entreprises ne souhaitent pas une contre-publicité de cet ordre. Nous devons définir une stratégie dans laquelle chacun joue un rôle complémentaire. Cela prendra du temps ».

 

A la direction nationale du renseignement et des enquêtes douanières (DNRED), le problème est également aigu. « Les bases de données, matériels informatiques et logiciels destinées à la surveillance du cybercommerce, représentent un poste budgétaire important », souligne le patron de la DNRED, Jean-Paul Garcia. « Nous devons encore améliorer nos performances en matière de lutte contre la cyberdélinquance, qui se développe beaucoup. La cellule Cyberdouane recevra avant la fin du mois de juin les moyens nécessaires pour développer la pratique des coups d'achat - nous en avons la capacité depuis 2012 - qui nous permet, sous une identité fictive, de pénétrer les réseaux ». Mais déjà la DNRED a déjà remporté quelques succès, en matière non seulement de médicaments et de cigarettes mais aussi de contrefaçons, « internet étant un lieu privilégié d'échanges », rappelle Jean-Paul Garcia.

Il n'y a aucun mystère: les entreprises veulent vendre. De plus en plus, elles se tournent vers l'infographie pour le faire. 
Mais l'intention publicitaire trop clairement affichée couplée avec une réalisation à l'économie nuit souvent à ce que l'infographie peut faire de mieux. Au lieu d'informer et de ravir le "spectateur" avec des données précieuses dépeintes avec brio, de nombreuses publications ennuyeuses ou banales vont simplement rejoindre la vaste friche de contenus non partagés sur internet.

Nous sommes inondés de publicité tous les jours, partout où nous regardons. Les annonces sont si répandues qu'elles ont perdu beaucoup de leur pouvoir. Les Infographies ne sont pas simplement des publicités habillées de nouveaux costumes, elles sont quelque chose d'autre: un outil informatif, rafraîchissant, amusant et partageable. 
Lorsqu'elles sont bien faites, les infographies peuvent encore contribuer à renforcer une image ou un produit. Voici quelques exemples qui vous montrent comment obtenir le bon équilibre.

Peer 1 Hosting has been trying to explain what the Internet looks like since 2011, when they created an infographic map of the Internet showing networks and routing connections across the world. Now they've visualized the web in a zoomable Map of the Internet app for iPhone andAndroid that lets you explore connectivity in a more hands-on way.

 

Using data from CAIDA, The Cooperative Association for Internet Data Analysis, the app shows 22,961 autonomous system nodes and the 50,519 connection that link them, both from a global view and a network view. Exploring it is a little like being lost in space, surrounded by floating lights and colors.

 

You can search for particular companies or domains and perform traceroutes to see how data moves between them, or you can also watch the Internet evolve over time. A timeline at the bottom pinpoints important years in the history of the web, like the launch of Wikipedia or last year's SOPA blackout, and lets you explore how connectivity has increased over the years. Based on current data, they even predict what the Internet landscape will look like in 2020.

 

In the blog post announcing the app release, the company says they think of the map as "an educational tool that represents the Internet’s evolution from 1994 to present day." Unless you already know a lot about networks and autonomous systems, it might more disorienting than educational, but at least it's fun to play with.

Facebook is preparing to roll out a new feature on Pages and popular Profiles that will help increase interactions with fans and readers: Replies. Up to now, visitors could comment on a post but others, including the Page owners themselves, would not be able to respond directly to them in cases of multiple people commenting on a post. Facebook has been running tests of the new feature since November last year; now a source tells us it will be rolling out the feature more formally as an opt-in on Monday, March 25, before turning it on for everyone in July.

 

Update: Facebook has now confirmed this story and rollout plans. “We think this update will allow for easier management of conversations around posts, which is a better experience for people interacting with Pages and public figure profiles,” a spokesperson said. (original story continues below)


To the right is a sample screen shot of how it looks from a page that has been testing the comments already. (Update: this is replacing the grainy picture used previously.)

 

Another feature that will be launched at the same time is active-thread sifting, which also had been in beta testing. Here, the most active conversations will be ordered at the top using an algorithm to appear higher in the posts.

 

Replies and the algorithmic sorting won’t work everywhere. They are being rolled out only to Page posts and Profiles with more than 10,000 followers, not personal accounts. Also, they will not work on mobile, although the intention is to make Replies part of the Graph API and mobile in the future.

 

Replies are already a part of Facebook’s commenting plug-in, which runs on third-party sites (TechCrunch used to use it; it doesn’t anymore). But this is the first time Replies will be appearing across Facebook itself.

Adaptive learning services are a perfect response to the business model challenges presented by OER to publishers. While the broad availability of free content (e.g., CNN.com) and OER have trained internet users to expect content to be free, many people are still willing to pay for services. Adaptive learning systems exploit this willingness by deeply intermingling content and services so that you cannot access one with using the other. Naturally, because an adaptive learning service is comprised of content plus adaptive services, it will be more expensive than static content used to be. And because it is a service, you cannot simply purchase it like you used to buy a textbook (particularly useful for publishers given the Court’s recent decision upholding the first sale doctrine with regard to textbooks). An adaptive learning service is something you subscribe to, like Netflix. And just like with Netflix, the day you stop paying for the service is the day you lose access to the service.

Ana's comments are worth noting. I wonder if, as a way out of the problem, we look at the state somehow take over the delivery/ownership model. Public edcuation is done, as it is. (See my ost http://www.ovenell-carter.com/education-aint-broke-so-dont-fix-it/) It's neither sustainable nor scalable. I believe we need a whole new structure; the current new option, as described in this article, is problematic. BUt some variation might work.

Jean-Pierre Balpe est directeur du département hypermédias et du laboratoire Paragraphe de l'Université de Paris 8. Il est également secrétaire général de la revue Action poétique. Chercheur, théoricien de la littérature informatique, auteur de divers ouvrages scientifiques et techniques (dernier ouvrage paru: Contextes de l'art numérique, Hermès, 2000), écrivain, après avoir très longtemps écrit des poèmes et nouvelles publiés dans diverses revues, il s'intéresse dès 1975 aux possibilités que l'informatique offre à l'écriture littéraire. En 1981 il est un des cofondateurs de l'ALAMO (Atelier de littérature assistée par la mathématique et les ordinateurs) et, à ce titre, conseiller auprès de la BPI (Bibliothèque publique d'information) pour les expositions "Les Immatériaux" et "Mémoires du futur". En 1985 il conçoit pour l'INA (Institut national de l'audiovisuel) et France Télécom le premier scénario de télévision interactive, diffusé alors par Canal +.

 

Depuis 1989, il réalise des logiciels d'écriture principalement utilisés lors d'expositions ou de manifestations publiques, notamment Un roman inachevé pour le stand du ministère de la Culture au MILIA (Marché international du livre illustré et des nouveaux médias) à Cannes et au MIM (Marché international du multimédia de Montréal) en 1995, Romans (Roman) pour l'exposition "Artifices" de novembre 1996 ou sous forme de spectacles comme Trois mythologies et un poète aveugle, première oeuvre générative collaborant avec un générateur musical. Il a actuellement en chantier un opéra numérique, Barbe-Bleue, résultat de la collaboration de trois générateurs: générateur de texte (le sien), générateur de musique (Alexandre Raskatov) et générateur de scénographie (Michel Jaffrennou). Il est également l'auteur de Trajectoires, un roman génératif en ligne.

Keep up with knowledge needs in developing countries: Librariesmust be cognisant of the amount of illiteracy still prevalent in some communities among developing countries and therefore come up with innovative ways of sharing development knowledge and information with the illiterate population.

 

Bring the information to the people: The location of physical libraries can be a problem for people who live in rural areas. Libraries must therefore go to the people rather than expect them to come to the libraries. That way, libraries could position themselves to be partners both to development agents and beneficiary communities.

 

Make information relevant for the poor: From our experience here in Zimbabwe, we note that there is a lot of information and knowledge out there, but most of it is irrelevant to the needs of the poor. It is important to identify relevant knowledge for the circumstances under focus, ensure that the knowledge can be understood by those for whom it is intended and work with them to value add to that knowledge.

The company, Ayasdi, (Cherokee for “to seek,”) has pioneered a way to help people visualize and digest complex data, from sports statistics, to financial models, to genetic maps.

In an age where “big data” is a Silicon Valley buzzword, people are increasingly bombarded with lots of data that is too complex for them to process. A Silicon Valley company founded by Stanford math professors has emerged to help analysts make sense of it all.

 

The company, Ayasdi, (Cherokee for “to seek,”) has pioneered a way to help people visualize and digest complex data, from sports statistics, to financial models, to genetic maps.

 

The company was born out of one of the most arcane areas of mathematics: topology, which is a type of geometry. The link between the past and present is Stanford math professor Gunnar Carlsson, one of Ayasdi’s founders. Carlsson’s programs allow complex data to be viewed in a 3-D structure, which highlights patterns in a more accessible way than an overwhelming spreadsheet or other form of data display.

 

Ayasdi’s main goal is to take Carlsson’s theories and apply them to real world problems – finding the relationships between certain genes and the incidence of cancer or analyzing what kinds of sports statistics denote a particular playing style.

 

With other programs, researchers need to know what they are looking for. They can search through big data sets, but they must do so in a targeted way, or have a guess at what patterns may already exist. With Iris, one of Ayasdi’s products, unexpected patterns can be detected, sometimes with enormous benefit.

 

Iris specializes in finding “a small signal in a noisy data set,” Johnson said. Groups of data can be compared with the push of one button. The statistical significance of a certain event can be perceived in seconds.

Writing a Twitter Bot – The Basic Ingredients

Writing a Twitter bot is surprisingly simple and you can get one up and running in 5 minutes. It helps if you know little bit of coding (simple JavaScript) but that’s certainly not a requirement for writing a basic Twitter bot.

A bot is essentially a program that is always running in the background and whenever it encounters a command (tweets in this), it processes it (based on the text of the tweeet) and sends a reply to the tweeter in another tweet.

Earlier, you would need a web server to run the bot while the bot itself would be written in languages like PHP, Perl or Python. That’s complicated so we will use Google Scripts to write the Twitter bot and host it on our Google Drive.

How to Write a Twitter Bot – Step by StepStep A: Setup a Twitter App (screenshot)Create a new account at Twitter that will become the bot. Then go to dev.twitter.com, sign-in with your new Twitter account and create a Twitter app. Give your app a name, description, website (any URL) and callback URL (https://spreadsheets.google.com/macros/). Agree to the terms, fill in the CAPTCHA and submit the form to create your first Twitter application.Once the Twitter app has been created, click the Settings tab and choose Read and Write under Application Type. This is important since we want the bot to read tweets as well as post tweets. Click the Update button to save your changes.Switch to the OAuth tool tab and make note of the Consumer Key and Consumer Secret. We will need these later in our Google Apps Script.Step B: Create a Wolfram Alpha App (screenshot)While the Twitter app will monitor and respond to tweets, the Wolfram App will be used to determine answers that users will be posing to your Twitter bot.Go to developer.wolfram.com, create an account and then choose “Get an App ID” to create your new app. [See update below]We will need this App ID in the Google Script. Remember that your free Wolfram Alpha App can only be used for a non-commercial purpose.

Update [3/19/2013] – If you need to create a Twitter bot with Wolfram|Alpha, you should send an email to businessdevelopment@wolframalpha.com to discuss licensing. The @DearAssistant Twitter bot has permission from Wolfram to run 2,000 queries per month.

Step C: Host the Twitter bot on Google DriveWhile you are signed-in to your Gmail account, go to script.google.com and then choose File -> Make a copy to duplicate the Twitter bot into your Google Drive.Edit the values of TWITTER_CONSUMER_KEY, TWITTER_CONSUMER_SECRET, TWITTER_HANDLE (your new Twitter account) and WOLFRAM_API_ID – you know them all from the previous steps.Go to Run -> Start to initialize the Twitter bot. Say yes if the script requires you to authorize access to certain Google Script services.Go to Run -> Start to actually run the Twitter bot. It will show an “Authorization Required” dialog and will redirect you to Twitter where you can grant the script access to your Twitter account.

What's in a generation?

Any grouping is arbitrary, but the ones used by the Ipsos-Mori researchers were:

 

Prewar

Anyone born in 1944 or earlier, who was at least alive for some of the second world war and is likely to have at least childhood memories of the war, the rationing that continued long after it, and the birth of the UK's welfare state.

 

Baby Boomers

The generation born between 1945 and 1965, as postwar prosperity and the new welfare state led to a population boom. This generation was the first to enjoy widespread university grants, welfare safety nets, and (if they were lucky enough to hang on to their job) were hitting the peak of their careers during the late 80s, and are now starting to move into retirement.

 

Generation X

Anyone born between 1966 and 1979, this generation grew up in the aftermath of the social reforms of the 60s, only to be hurled into the economic battles of the 1980s, as the postwar consensus crumbled.

 

Generation Y

For Ipsos Mori, Gen Y-ers are those born between 1980 and 1992 (since those under 18 aren't polled). Born under Thatcher or John Major, and becoming politically aware in the Blair era, this is a generation born into economic good times, only to be hurled into global economic meltdown in the first years of their careers.
