Le Data Storytelling demande de la réflexion pour imaginer un scénario et un fil conducteur qui auront un impact sur l’auditoire. Il est d'autant plus important de bien construire son histoire quand on traite de sujets graves ou de causes sensibles (ex. nombre d'accidentés sur les routes en France), pour marquer les esprits et sensibiliser. Sachant que le point de départ du Data Storytelling reste la donnée, la lisibilité et la fluidité des informations délivrées sont capitales. Les outils de BI proposant des fonctionnalités de Data Storytelling assurent une interactivité sans précédent, présentant des tableaux de bord à la manière d’une série de diapositives PowerPoint, mais de façon dynamique.


L’interfaçage de l’outil de Data Storytelling avec la base de données permet de créer des présentations dynamiques et de les modifier à tout moment, en temps réel, en jouant par exemple sur un pivot d’axes ou un filtre.

I recently found a thought-provoking piece in the Harvard Business Review Blog Network entitled “Data is Worthless if You Don’t Communicate It” by Tom Davenport. This article supports what I’ve been harping on in the blogosphere for a long while now – every data set tells a story and it is the job of the data scientist to be its mouthpiece. Gone are the days when you could just print a report with columns of numbers to provide business insight. As the article says:

 

"Too many managers are, with the help of their analyst colleagues, simply compiling vast databases of information that never see the light of day, or that only get disseminated in auto-generated business intelligence reports. As a manager, it’s not your job to crunch the numbers; …  it is your job to communicate them".
