The Separatist Map of Africa

The Separatist Map of Africa | E-scriptum | Scoop.it
When African states gained independence, the continent's new leaders agreed to respect the old colonial borders to avoid endless wars.

This interactive map shows the major conflicts on the African continent where the combatants have geopolitical aspirations to separate from the state and create a new, autonomous state.  Click on the red arrows and you can read about the warring factions and the current situation in that region.

Fascinating interactive map looking at the separatist movements in Africa.

Cynthia Williams's curator insight, July 3, 2013 11:00 AM

It seems as though African countries are actually trying to go back to their pre-colonial boundaries. The agreement they made to respect the old colonial borders to avoid war has never been effective.

Augmented Reality's Rapid Progress

Augmented Reality's Rapid Progress | E-scriptum | Scoop.it

Last month we featured a short film called Sight, which explored the future possibilities of augmented reality technology. While this film is mostly science fiction, the technology of augmented reality is rapidly advancing and reaching dramatic levels.

In the TED video below, Matt Mills and Tamara Roukaerts demonstrate Aurasma, a new augmented reality tool that can seamlessly animate the world as seen through a smartphone. Going beyond previous augmented reality, their "auras" can do everything from making a painting talk to overlaying live news onto a printed newspaper just like those in Harry Potter, and instruction manuals transform into on-the-spot virtual reality training guides.

Augmented reality is the process of adding layers of information onto the world we see, viewable only through technology. In this space, the Aurasma Lite app uses a smartphone and camera to lay "auras"--3D images, games, animations--onto real-world places. Point your phone at a movie poster on the street and launch a trailer; point at a building to pull up an interactive map... or create your own "aura" and upload it to the virtual space for anyone to see.

Using satellite images, young students learn about human impact on environment

Using satellite images, young students learn about human impact on environment | E-scriptum | Scoop.it

"With the help of satellite images fifth and sixth grade students at Mr. Tim Blum’s geography class at the University of Wyoming Lab School got a birds-eye view of how humans have impacted or modified their environments. Images acquired by satellites decades apart showed cleared forests, irrigated crop fields in the middle of the deserts, altered landscapes (new roads and water bodies), and urban growth."

SD: Geospatial technologies can sound daunting for teachers that don't feel that they are specialists. Yet there are simple ways to make sophisticated technologies very relevant to just about any grade level as this article demonstrates.

The 4 Big Reasons You Should Try Mobile Learning | Edudemic

The 4 Big Reasons You Should Try Mobile Learning | Edudemic | E-scriptum | Scoop.it

The idea of implementing mobile learning into a course or instruction may be daunting for many educators. They may assume that mobile learning (aka m-learning) is too complicated and so decide to stick to the methods they have more experience with. Besides, the old fashioned methods of learning have worked for centuries, so what’s the need for change?

MOOC pedagogy: the challenges of developing for Coursera | ALT Online Newsletter

MOOC pedagogy: the challenges of developing for Coursera | ALT Online Newsletter | E-scriptum | Scoop.it

In the summer of 2012 the team of teachers and researchers associated with the MSc in E-learning programme at the University of Edinburgh began developing a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) for the Coursera platform.  Launched only a year earlier, this for-profit company founded by Stanford professors Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller has focussed primarily on hosting computer science related courses from big name US institutions.  The recently announced partnership with the University of Edinburgh presented the team with an opportunity to engage and experiment with the much-publicised MOOC format, and foreground issues related to the theory and practice of online education itself.  What follows are some of our perspectives on the planning and development of a large scale open course, what challenges the MOOC presents for delivering a worthwhile educational experience, and what questions this type of course format provokes for a team already teaching and researching in the field of e-learning and technology in higher education.

Elements of a Digital Classroom #edtech – eLearning Blog Dont Waste Your Time | E-scriptum | Scoop.it

It seems all infographics must contain some new information or viewpoint on the eBook vs textbook scenario, and this one is no different. But, while it looks at a large range of digital ‘tools’ available, it is the way in which it seemed to link Blackboard, Moodle, and iTunesU together as tools open source ‘classroom management’ tools (below) … is it? Did I miss something here – “Open source software is increasing in popularity when it comes to online classroom management. These tools are customisable to a school’s individual need and allows students to access course materials on demand, outside of the classroom.” I don’t think anything Apple related will even be open source?
