Does The Internet Amplify Gender Stereotypes? | Common Sense Media | Digital Citizenship & eSafety | Scoop.it
Digital spaces can be inventive worlds, where children stretch the limits of imagination and identity. Yet online interactions and social behaviors often reflect and reinforce stereotypical gender norms, or codes -- acceptable expressions of masculinity and femininity that both shape how young people develop their identity and influence their thinking about the roles and opportunities they see available to themselves and others.

5 Dependable iPhone and iPad Apps That Filter Content for Kids | TIME.com | Digital Citizenship & eSafety | Scoop.it
With curated apps and websites, I can help guide my kids to content that is appropriate and (heaven forbid!) even learning-oriented. They won’t necessarily prevent kids from finding other stuff, but together with filtering, they can help youngsters stay on a safer path.

Down the road, I imagine that my techie kids will move on to hacking my computer and looking at whatever they want — but for now, I think that these apps are very handy.

Researchers dispel myths about cyberbullying

Researchers dispel myths about cyberbullying | Digital Citizenship & eSafety | Scoop.it

Statistics from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also show that bullying — while still a significant problem — has not become more prevalent over the past few years. Bullying among high school students (Grades 9-12) remained flat (20%) between 2009 and 2011 with a slight decrease among boys and a slight increase for girls. The report found that in 2009, girls were twice as likely (22% vs 11%) to be “electronically bullied” than boys.

Why Digital Citizenship Must Be Taught in Schools

Why Digital Citizenship Must Be Taught in Schools | Digital Citizenship & eSafety | Scoop.it
Welcome to the digital age — an era increasingly defined by a growing gulf between those who grew up with technology and those to whom modern-day advancements such as apps, cloud computing and smartphones remain esoteric. And, for that matter, one in which experienced role models able to provide positive, real-world solutions for addressing new and emerging problems (e.g. cyberbaiting, sexting and live broadcasting of personal data) are increasingly hard to find. For previous generations, parents and grandparents could serve as a vital source of wisdom and learning for all things family-related. But like many of today’s educators and experts, they too are facing the stark reality of having never been confronted by life in a world of 24/7 online streaming downloads, instant mobile video sharing, and innocent mistakes that live on in infamy forever via the Internet.

Student Access to the Internet: Fixing the Balance Between Learning and Safety - Enterasys Networks

Student Access to the Internet: Fixing the Balance Between Learning and Safety - Enterasys Networks | Digital Citizenship & eSafety | Scoop.it
How can schools better balance open Internet access with the need to protect students from inappropriate content and applications? Open access has been shown to expand not just the student’s knowledge, but more importantly, their critical and independent decision-making skills. Unfortunately, in order to adequately protect students, school districts have been forced to use blunt web filters that coarsely prevent access to web sites and applications. According to the recently-released American Association of School Librarians (AASL) annual survey, 52% of schools complain that filtering impedes student research and 42% find it discounts the social aspects of learning. On the other side though, 50% indicated that filtering decreased the number of potential distractions.
