Research: The New iPad: 7 Updates That Mean Business

Apple reinvented the tablet with its original iPad two years ago and redefined the form factor last year with a device so thin and light it felt more like a glowing, metallic magazine than a piece of computer hardware. Perhaps it’s just that familiarity breeds contempt, but the unceremoniously named “new” iPad seems more evolutionary than revolutionary. Still, it sports a few headline features—including the best display yet seen on any mobile device, tablet, smartphone or PC—while retaining all of the original’s strengths. It remains the standard against which all other tablets will be judged.

Will The New York Times Redesign Lead To A New Web Standard? | E-publishing | Scoop.it
The latest conversation in web design has been, how do we reimagine the web for a mobile device? Do you design your mobile site first, then supersize it for PCs? Or do you wrap all that content in an app and bring special functionality to tablets?

Make your own magazine for the iPad with PRSS | Maak je eigen iPad-magazine met PRSS

Make your own magazine for the iPad with PRSS | Maak je eigen iPad-magazine met PRSS | E-publishing | Scoop.it

(...)

Niels Biersteker's insight:

For English readers; this is an interview that explains the ideas and workings of PRSS, a new (free) tool to make magazines for the iPad.

My virtual desktop experiment: No desktop. No laptop. Just my iPad. | Cloud IQ | E-publishing | Scoop.it

I’ll admit it. I was a VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) skeptic. But now I’m a convert. What turned me from cynic to evangelist? I ran a little experiment. Last month, I was preparing to travel for an entire week. First, I attended Cloud Expo East 2012in New York from Monday through Thursday, and then headed down to Avalon, N.J., for a few days. The experiment was to go sans laptop for the entire week, bringing only my iPad with an Apple keyboard running The Evolved Office: Desktop. It works on the iPad by utilizing VMware’s VMView app. You download it from the App Store, enter your connection URL, log in just like you would with any PC or laptop, and boom … Windows 7 is running on the iPad. Or in my case, Windows 7 running on my iPad, running on the Evolve IP VDI infrastructure.

C4: This creative coding framework was made just for iOS

C4: This creative coding framework was made just for iOS | E-publishing | Scoop.it

Code as art, an ever growing movement where creatives and geeks collide (e.g.: Water Light Graffiti, the work of Raven Kwok and this Arduino installation), has captured plenty of attention lately, and although Apple has yet to really embrace experimental works with their own category in the App Store, apps like Thicket and Orphion have us giddy.

Following in the footsteps of artistic-focused coding frameworks like Processing and openFrameworks, C4 is a new kid on the block with an interesting twist: it’s entirely iOS-focused. The decision to solely target a single, closed platform may seem like a limitation at first, but this hyper-focus on iDevices could prove to be a benefit, enabling C4 to do one thing and do it right.

C4 emphasizes a media focused approach, and hopes to be the easiest way for developers to jump right into animation and multi-touch interaction for their iOS apps. In this space, there’s a wide range of work, varying from games and experimental productivity tools to completely abstract installations like in the example videos below.

Are Tablet-Only Publications Dead?

Are Tablet-Only Publications Dead? | E-publishing | Scoop.it

Is there a future for tablet-only publications? The last few weeks have cast an ominous shadow over this niche industry following substantial staff cuts at News Corp.'s The Daily and a decision by the Huffington Post to give up on charging for its iPad magazine after just five issues.

While some media observers are quick to write off the format, many in the industry see recent woes as part of the natural growing pains of an emerging market.

A good part of the backlash stems from how inevitable tablet magazines seemed at their inception two years ago. With magazines and legacy print publications struggling, the iPad offered a flashy and interactive new way for publishers to bring new content to the tech-savvy masses without the burden of printing and distribution costs.
Two years later, however, the tablet publishing market isn't the runaway success many envisioned. Yet despite glaring questions from media pundits, many media buyers and industry veterans are surprisingly calm.

Transform A Tablet Into An Affordable Kiosk For Your Clients | Smashing Mobile

Transform A Tablet Into An Affordable Kiosk For Your Clients | Smashing Mobile | E-publishing | Scoop.it
Twenty minutes after unboxing my first iPad, I realized this device’s potential to revolutionize the world of kiosks. Ten years ago, my team and I worked with Honda to develop touchscreen kiosks for its dealerships.

Step 1: Hardware Considerations

Step 2: Software Considerations

(...)

Conclusion

The clunky, expensive kiosks of yesterday are becoming irrelevant in today’s world of elegant low-cost touchscreen devices. Whether clients want to capture email addresses, enable customers to sign up for events in the store or add interactive elements to their artwork, a touchscreen kiosk can deliver the results they’re looking for. Tablet kiosks can be integrated into any decor smartly and sleekly. Now that affordability is no longer a factor, you can start working with clients to develop apps that bring imagination back to their business solutions.

Create Your Own Smartphone App With Infinite Monkeys - No Coding Knowledge Required

Create Your Own Smartphone App With Infinite Monkeys - No Coding Knowledge Required | E-publishing | Scoop.it

It would be great if we all had the time, skills, and patience to learn computer coding, especially since technology pervades so many areas of our life. But thankfully, there are applications and web developers out there who provide ways for the rest of us to produce apps with little or no coding skills. Back in June, I reviewed one such web application called Buzztouch, which is designed to allow anyone to create their own smartphone application. Now a similar program has just been released called Infinite Monkeys, a web-based tool geared toward niche communities who want to share content on the iPhone and Android platforms.

Infinite Monkeys provides three different app platform models, ranging from free to the pro level version of $499. But for many users, the free HTML 5 web-based, and ad-supported model should suffice.

Maily is an iPad app that lets kids send personalized emails to their parents, grandparents and close friends securely.

The app, especially designed for kids 4 years and older, lets them create their own emails by drawing, or adding photos, backgrounds and stickers.

The app is safe for kids as their personal contact list would be restricted.

It also comes with built-in parent control feature, that lets parents check on who their children communicate with, and approve or reject messages that are sent or received by their children.

Write 'Choose Your Own Adventure’ Books Through This Clever HTML5 App

Write 'Choose Your Own Adventure’ Books Through This Clever HTML5 App | E-publishing | Scoop.it

FastcoDresign

MARK WILSON

Who hasn’t, at least for a moment, thought a Choose Your Own Adventure book would be fun to write? It’s like making a game out of words. Branching narratives are a surprisingly natural approach to make books interactive. But they’re a logistical nightmare. Multiple storylines? Converging plots? How could you keep even a simple story straight?

A company called inkle appears to have figured it out. Recently, they released the impressive Frankenstein app and interactive novel, and while we weren’t so sure that rewriting Frankenstein was a win for literature, we were impressed by their flowing, option-fueled text interface.

(...)

Now, inkle is making their internal compositional software available to the public free as an HTML5 web app called inklewriter. So, without any coding expertise at all, and without much preplanned plot, either, you can simply start typing an interactive novel.
