MIT Rethinks How You Consume News

MIT Rethinks How You Consume News | E-publishing | Scoop.it

The global news cycle can be overwhelming. So many cultures, regions, and conflicts around the world intersect to form a new mass of headlines each day, that it can be nearly impossible to keep up. Even for those of us who track current events religiously, contextualizing the pieces at play--really understanding the sociopolitical nuances of the conflict in Gaza, say--can be a struggle.

Fold, a news platform being developed by MIT Media Lab’s Alexis Hope and Kevin Hu, has been designed to provide context at its very core. Whereas most news sites (including Fast Company) use links to provide background on who is doing what where and why, Fold is a news site that incorporates background information directly into the articles, including definitions, maps, and other assets.

Niels Biersteker's insight:

FOLD is built by Alexis Hope and Kevin Hu at the MIT Media Lab and will launch for open beta by February 2015.

Nieuwe huisstijl Den Haag onthuld | Bureau: Ontwerpwerk | E-publishing | Scoop.it

Twitter Co-Founder Evan Williams Lays Out His Plan For The Future Of Media | TechCrunch | E-publishing | Scoop.it

Twitter Co-Founder Evan Williams has an ambitious new plan: to shift our daily reading habits away from consuming incremental news bites and towards engaging with enlightened ideas curated by an intelligent algorithm. Ordinarily, such a goal would seem utopian, were it not for the fact that Williams is among a handful of Internet pioneers who have disrupted the media industry multiple times.

Alpha Apps: The Smartphone Future No One Is Talking About

Alpha Apps: The Smartphone Future No One Is Talking About | E-publishing | Scoop.it
Users. Developers. Everybody. The design of Apples new Extensions will change the way we all use apps.

Today, our apps are basically self-contained castles. Walled off from every other app, you have to open Google Maps to find restaurants in your area, then you have to open up Yelp to search its reviews, and then you have to load Safari to search what Kow Soy is because everybody on Yelp says you just have to order it.

But this method is inefficient. In response, Apple debuted a new feature that will appear in their new iPhone/iPad software, iOS 8. They’re called Extensions. And what they do is allow you to use apps within apps, without having to multitask your way back and forth.

This Simple Data-Scraping Tool Could Change How Apps Are Made | Wired Design

This Simple Data-Scraping Tool Could Change How Apps Are Made | Wired Design | E-publishing | Scoop.it
Kimono is a web app that lets you slurp data from any website and turn it instantly into an API.

For the last five months, Rowe and Ranade have been building out Kimono, a web app that lets you slurp data from any website and turn it instantly into an API. Using a bookmarklet, you highlight the parts of a site you want to scrape and Kimono does the rest. Those with programming chops can take the code Kimono spits out bake it into their own apps; for the code illiterate, Kimono will automatically rework scraped data into a dynamic chart, list, or a simple web app. In essence, it’s a point and click toolkit for taking apart the web, with the aim of letting people build new things with it.

Dean Meyers's curator insight, June 21, 2013 5:02 AM

Successful innovation tends to feel simple and clear, or provide a more direct path to resolving a dilemma. Visual information that supports innovation should be just as transparent in giving us the facts, the story or the drama. This article points out straightforward design principles with a focus on producing graphics for news or journalism, but can be applied to revealing or explaining any kind of story visually. Reading through them you won't find the need for advanced technical skills, just good judgement and attention to details.
