Useful discussion prompt for openness - in professional learning, and when considering development of MOOC learning materials. Massive benefit if these can become part of the OER ecosystem.

Open Educational Resources (OER) offer higher education governance leaders a cost-efficient method of improving the quality of teaching and learning while at the same time reducing costs imposed on students related to the purchase of expensive commercial textbooks and learning materials. Leading scholars around the world are already participating in the OER movement even without support from most higher education institutions, including community colleges. Higher education governance officials, particularly boards of trustees and senior academic governance leaders, have a tremendous opportunity to harness the advantages of OER for their institutions.

Future Learning and OER

Imagine the day when students, because of the very nature of how they were taught, expect to and actually do verify the information they find online, work to produce content that adds to the body of knowledge.

The Open Professionals Education Network (OPEN),http://open4us.org,  funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, has created free services aligned with the U.S. Department of Labor’s grant requirements and designed to support your project.

The Open Professionals Education Network (OPEN) will provide free support and technical assistance to all grantees of the $2 billion Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College & Career Training (TAACCCT, http://www.doleta.gov/taaccct) grant program from the U.S. Department of Labor.

OPEN will help grantees meet the provisions laid out in the solicitation for grant applications, including the CC BY open licensing requirement. OPEN services will be provided by Creative Commons (CC), Carnegie Mellon’s Open Learning Initiative (OLI), Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST) and the Washington State Board for Community & Technical Colleges (SBCTC), which have individual but complementary areas of expertise in openness and the design of educational resources.

Our partners’ long-standing experience in these noted service areas can help you achieve your project goals while minimizing time and resources spent.

Open Educational Resources (OER).

OER are teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an open license, such as the Creative Commons Attribution license required by DOL, that permits their free use and re-purposing by others.

Open educational resources include full courses and supplemental resources such as textbooks, images, videos, animations, simulations, assessments, … Find OER (http://open4us.org/find-oer/)

A core concept for understanding OER is that they are learning materials freely available under a license that allows them to be:

- Reused  - Revised  - Remixed  - Redistributed
