How MOOCs can develop good (and bad) teaching habits (essay) @insidehighered | e-learning-ukr | Scoop.it

I’ve been working recently with a faculty member who is turning his thermodynamics course into a massive open online course, or MOOC. Working on this project, I’ve noticed that MOOCs have distinctive features that can help instructors avoid certain instructional pitfalls while simultaneously steering them in the direction of others.

But just because there isn’t a viable business model doesn’t mean MOOCs can’t help universities advance their missions. MIT OpenCourseware was launched in 2002, after other universities had launched proto-MOOCs such as Fathom (Columbia, LSE, Chicago, Michigan) and AllLearn (Yale, Stanford, Princeton, Oxford). MIT OpenCourseware published all MIT course materials online and made them available globally. Currently, more than 2,000 courses are posted on the site, which has had more than 125 million visitors, helping to ensure that MIT remains the most searched university online.

Only then will MOOC providers be perceived as offering legitimate platforms for K-12 schools...

A whitepaper on the future of corporate MOOCs

A whitepaper on the future of corporate MOOCs | e-learning-ukr | Scoop.it

Docebo’s whitepaper – following the lines of the webinar discussion – considers ten MOOC-related questions:

What’s a MOOC?What’s the future for MOOCs?From a corporate perspective, what types of MOOCs are there, how are they being implemented and why would a corporation want a MOOC? Are MOOCs really a disruptive force in learning? What’s the primary benefit to businesses offering MOOCs?Will MOOCs up-end the fundamental structure of teaching - especially in a corporate setting? What will be the effect of MOOCs in developing countries and immature learning markets? How do you see corporate acceptance of MOOC-based education? How can you close the gap between MOOCs’ high enrolment and low completion rates? Are MOOCs actually disrupting anything?
