New Eyes on American Art curated by Henry W.

Thousands of items are in storage at the Walters Art Museum. Not all of these have been photographed, and in some cases they have never been properly studied. With a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services staff at the Walters have worked to digitize more than 600 American art works from the permanent collection to add to the museum’s “Works of Art” website. These paintings, drawings and miniatures are now freely available to view and use without copyright restriction. As part of the digitization process paintings and drawings were taken out of their frames, and the fronts and backs of portrait miniatures were shot in full color at high resolution. Information such as artist, medium, date, and provenance were checked, researched and updated in the museum’s database. We are excited to share this previously hidden part of the collection with you.
