What do we mean when we say, “Transformative learning experiences powered by technology”?

What do we mean when we say, “Transformative learning experiences powered by technology”? | E-Learning Methodology | Scoop.it

A transformative learning experience fundamentally changes our understanding of what it means to learn and what it means to work together with others to learn.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, February 5, 11:15 AM

Technology is not a tool. Heidegger proposed it involves two intertwined definitions: human/anthropological and technological/instrumental. He proposed that technology is about a way of thinking, acting, and speaking about, with, and through the tools humans use. In that sense, the line about technology being transforming is accurate. When the two definitions are separated, that is not the case.

Wilko Dijkhuis's curator insight, February 6, 3:32 AM

Nice example of how a persons life and learning strategies became transformed by an experience at a young age (in this particular case it was an encounter with primitive computer technology, but in general it  could have been anything: e.g. hearing the saxophone played well for the first time, or "seeing" the mother of god in a cave)

Alas, also a typical example of unwarranted educational proselytizing. The man is so enthusiastic about his new insight that everybody has to hear the good news. Even worse, everybody has to convert and repent. The idea that Catholicism, Jazz or technology enhanced project based learning  does not work for everybody, never enters the man's mind.

Lets stop with this kind of "inspirational" stories in educational design. Lets stick to science (mainly cognitive and social psychology). I know it is boring, but it is our best shot at finding out what works for whom under which circumstances.

How digital publishing is changing the face of storytelling

How digital publishing is changing the face of storytelling | E-Learning Methodology | Scoop.it

The idea that print books exist at the top of a storytelling hierarchy, with video games, web series, YouTubers, podcasts, zines and interactive apps beneath them, is archaic and regressive: all platforms should be as highly regarded as print.

Inside and Outside Digital Sharing

Inside and Outside Digital Sharing | E-Learning Methodology | Scoop.it

As teachers, we are most familiar and comfortable with “inside sharing.” Inside sharing includes student work we post on the walls of our classroom and school hallways, and the ideas we share in hallway conversations, at lunch, or in the teachers lounge.

How to Incubate Creativity in School Through Making and Discovery - Mind/Shift #makered

How to Incubate Creativity in School Through Making and Discovery - Mind/Shift #makered | E-Learning Methodology | Scoop.it
Math teacher Laura Kretschmar gave students a rubric with specific goals around collaboration, communication and instructions to use various functions in the program, but not a lot else. She’s intentionally giving them a lot of freedom to play with the program, create cool designs and figure out what the functions do.

“I think “y” means, like, going up,” says Juritzy Maldonado. “So to pull it up, I’m going to try to change the number.” She punches in 200 for “y” and watches the image she’s creating shift upward. Another group discovers that if they hit “repeat” multiple times, they can create a parachute-like design that they’ve figured out how to color in various ways. That wasn’t their original plan, but they’re running with it now.

The diagram is coherent and appropriate. Complex, also, but then simplifying teaching too much means the diagram becomes trite and possibly misleading.

Good teaching is complex and difficult and we often neglect that to our detriment.
