Facilitating Collaborative Learning: 20 Things You Need to Know From the Pros
There is an age old adage that says “two heads are better than one”.  Consider collaboration in recent history:  Watson and Crick or Page and Brin (Founders of Google).

But did you know it was a collaborative Computer Club about basic programming at a middle school that brought together two minds that would change the future of computing?  Yes, those two were of course, Bill Gates and Paul Allen, the founders of Microsoft.

Three Good Tools for Building Flipped Lessons That Include Assessment Tools

Three Good Tools for Building Flipped Lessons That Include Assessment Tools | e-learning in higher education and beyond | Scoop.it

In the right setting the flipped classroom model can work well for some teachers and students. I recently received an email from a reader who was looking for a recommendation for a tool would enable her to add an assessment aspect to her flipped lesson. Here are some tools that can accomplish that goal.

Are you interested in flipping part of your class and would like to know some tools that would also allow you to add assessments to videos. Richard Byrne has three suggestions and all are free!

*eduCanon - Quoting from the post "eduCanon allows teachers to build flipped lessons using YouTube and Vimeo videos, create questions about the videos, then assign lessons to their students."

*Teachem uses the TED-Ed model. Choose videos that are hosted on YouTube. Add questions and comments. Videos may be public or private.

*Knowmia is a website and iPad app and their website has over 17,000 videos that you may use. You may also create your own. Knowmia has been designed for teachers and students and provides an Assignmen Wizard and is adding additional  features.

If you looking for a tool that allows you to flip a lesson and also include an assessment these three provide a variety of options. Have fun exploring and finding the one that will work best for you.

Flipping Blooms Taxonomy | Powerful Learning Practice

Flipping Blooms Taxonomy | Powerful Learning Practice | e-learning in higher education and beyond | Scoop.it

In media studies we often look at the creation of print and digital advertisements. Traditionally, students learn many of the foundational principles for creating a layout through a lecture or text book reading, and then eventually create their own.

What if we started with creativity rather than principles?

Via JackieGerstein Ed.D., Vladimir Kukharenko, Mario Zidar
Ulrike Grabe's insight:

Who ever suggested Bloom's taxonomy as a pyramid that required to master the bottom levels before the top ones?

Putting 'creating' first is the logical manifestation of action-oriented teaching.

LLZ Uni Halle's curator insight, December 18, 2013 2:26 AM

"...Results showed that on average, teachers believed 49% of the neuromyths, particularly myths related to commercialized educational programs. Around 70% of the general knowledge statements were answered correctly. Teachers who read popular science magazines achieved higher scores on general knowledge questions. More general knowledge also predicted an increased belief in neuromyths. These findings suggest that teachers who are enthusiastic about the possible application of neuroscience findings in the classroom find it difficult to distinguish pseudoscience from scientific facts. .."

10 Teacher-Tested Tools for Flipping Your Classroom

10 Teacher-Tested Tools for Flipping Your Classroom | e-learning in higher education and beyond | Scoop.it

For the past couple of weeks, I’ve spent some time addressing my earlier commitments to flipping at least some portion of my Language Arts classes. (You can learn about my ongoing saga at “4 Ways Flipping Forces Fundamental Change” and at “Why I Haven’t Flipped…Yet”). Reading FlipYour Classroom by Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams provided practical advice and a justification for flipping, Learning about the Stanford studies that suggest better results from flipping your flipping (that is, doing hands-on work in the classroom first, reinforced by flipped lessons at night) But, ultimately, what I needed to do was to dive in and try out some tools with my kids and my curriculum in mind. The unexpected result: I’ve had to acknowledge something I hadn’t really thought about — I am a video-phobe.

Ulrike Grabe's insight:

from the text:

"Bergmann and Sams are quick to point out that simply transferring a boring lecture to video will not transform anyone’s teaching in a way that dramatically benefits students."

Facebook is for grandparents: What we need in a next-gen social network

Facebook is for grandparents: What we need in a next-gen social network | e-learning in higher education and beyond | Scoop.it

Facebook today doesn’t resemble a thriving, living metropolis – it’s more of a friendly neighborhood bar. For that reason, FB will face its cruel destiny of simply fading away. Living in the same city as your parents is forgiven and acceptable; there is enough diversity and distance between everyone. But finding yourself sitting in the same bar as your mom and dad – that’s horrifying. When your father posts pictures of sunsets and breakfast on his wall you know it’s over.

Sugata Mitra has opened the doors of the world’s first School in the Cloud. A look at it and what happens there. Located inside George Stephenson High School in Killingworth, England, this one-room learning lab is a space where students can embark on their own learning adventures, exploring whatever questions most intrigue them. Students even designed the interior of the space — which has colorful beanbags scattered throughout and (very appropriately) fluffy clouds painted on the walls.
